- max vEurope174 contributionsVilnius tourist magnetSt. Anne's Church is graceful and light. It is very different from other pompous baroque churches in Vilnius. It's not that I don't like baroque, on the contrary, I quietly love it, but St. Anne is something. Well, probably everyone knows the legend about Napoleon, but the fact that the church is Gothic in its style, and the execution technique is already Renaissance and two eras are closely intertwined in it, is probably not known to many. The church was built in the 1500s, which is probably why it was the product of a mixture of two beautiful architectural styles.Visited July 2023Written 13 August 2023

This is an absolutely magnificent and wonderfully picturesque gothic-like church with a striking reddish color.

There is a banner made of yellow and white cloth hanging infront of the main altar that has the Statue of Jesus and the Holy Family. Around this church are several statues of saints and images of Virgin Mary.
Took some pictures and proceeded to visit the church next door, the St. Bernadine Church

Incredibly beautiful church. Almost unnoticed. Unfortunately didn't manage to visit inside (not sure if it is possible), but definitely the most beautiful one in Vilnius.

Within Vilnius’ Bernardine Historical-Architectural Ensemble, St. Anne’s Church must surely be the jewel in the crown.
Piercing the sky, its many brick-red spires give rise to a very dramatic image and confirm its classification as ‘Flamboyant Gothic’ and ‘Brick Gothic’. Bricks of 33 varieties were used in the construction of the church (1495-1500).
Its Baroque interior is considerably less dramatic and, like many other churches around the world, its exterior is far more eye-catching than its interior.
St. Anne’s is adjacent to the much larger Bernardine Church (~ Church of St. Francis of Assisi), which, itself, has a striking exterior.
Interestingly, while St. Anne’s Church was never closed down during Soviet occupation, the Bernardine Church was closed down.
Overall, an incredibly beautiful complex and well worth visiting.

Our hotel was up the street so I could view the exterior with coffee in the morning but then we'd be doing things during the day and didn't make it inside before it closed. The courtyard has some nice statues and it is away from the church congested street of Piles. Schedule yourself better than I did.
