- Elina MichaelidouLondon, United Kingdom584 contributionsBeautiful staircase and interesting exhibitionsBratislava castle is really worth a visit. There are some lovely gardens to have a walk around and many interesting exhibitions on the inside. The main exhibitions talk about the recent history of the country and how Slovakia arrived at its current state. There are also a few rooms that talk about history from further back, as well as about the history of the castle. Once inside, you can miss the beautiful staircase that leads into the different rooms.Visited June 2022Written 13 December 2022
- Peggy MStornoway, United Kingdom151 contributionsCastle on high hillWalked up to the castle and steep climb up cobble street and the steep stairs.Lots of space around it to roam and an eating place as well.Lots of entrances around the castle which you need to explore to find the correct way in [you buy a ticket to get inside].On one side there is a road very close which means you can get transport up if not fit to climb[ or lazy].Lovely view from the front of the castle overlooking the city.Visited October 2022Written 15 December 2022
- Raintree_ThailandBangkok, Thailand3,760 contributionsNot all it appears to be!The Bratislava Castle is an imposing structure that sits on a hill high above the city. It has a history going back hundreds of years, but has been renovated and rebuilt over and over. The latest reconstruction was in the 1950s and 1960s and although the reconstruction follows some of the historical characteristics, it is also a mix of styles from different eras.Visited November 2022Written 9 January 2023
- Maggi713Baltimore, Maryland12,069 contributionsNot Enough Time! This is one castle that you cannot miss. The castle is white with a red roof and sits perched on a hill overlooking the old town and the Danube River. Because of its size and location, it has been the main attraction and symbol of the country. You have to walk up a steep path to get to the castle. We were very disappointed on our tour with Viking that all we got to see was the courtyard. They did not give us time to do anything else. The castle is a huge rectangular shaped building with four corner towers. The castle was in ruins after a fire in 1811. It continued to decline until 1957 when restoration began, some parts were only completed as recently as 2000. There is a lot to see here: Castle building (The Palace), Entrance gates (Sigismund Gate in the southeast – the best preserved original part of the site, built in the 15th century; Vienna Gate in the southwest – built in 1712; Nicholas Gate in the northeast – built in the 16th century and Leopold Gate) and some other buildings.. It still houses a museum and the presentation rooms for the National Council of the Slovak Republic and for the president. A new baroque garden behind the castle was opened in June 2016 and entry is free of charge. You will be treated to exceptional views of the city and the Danube.Visited November 2022Written 9 January 2023
- James PLeeds, United Kingdom557 contributionsNice castleThe castle is beautiful to look at for sure and it has a strong history, however I felt there wasn't much going on inside. There were some nice exhibit pieces, but not as much as I expected. Hard to spend alot of time inside, however It's definitely worth a visit and you get great views in all directions over the city.Visited October 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 January 2023
- Ntt1 contributionVery disappointedVery nice building to look at, nice area around but not enough to see inside. I would say--nothing. A visit to the castle requires a lot of walking but does not give satisfaction. Would be better just to take photos of the impressive building without wasting time and money to get in.Visited January 2023Travelled with familyWritten 29 January 2023
- Suzanne HClayton, California69 contributionsThe castle tour is mainly a photographic history of Slovakia with some art pieces.Don’t expect a Medieval castle inside. The modern renovation and displays are more like a museum. The pictorial history is the main focus and is alleviated somewhat by some ecclesiastical art as well as a room of 20th century Slovakian paintings. The entry is inexpensive, but perhaps just enjoy walking around the gardens and castle walls.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 January 2023
- MarkW55Castle Douglas, United Kingdom476 contributionsGreat views across the DanubeIt is a steep walk up to the Castle but a great view when you get there. Entry to the grounds is via an old courtyard with a restaurant. The castle is very well maintained and the gardens offer a pleasant walk. I didn't go inside the castle although there was a light and airy gallery showing modern art which was free to access and offered free toilet facilities!Visited January 2023Written 1 February 2023
- Jake CGreater Manchester, United Kingdom122 contributionsWorth a visitThe castle is perched on a hilltop next to the old town, so you’re staying in the city centre you can’t really miss it. We didn’t go in the museum but the castle itself is impressive and you can get great views of the Danube from the castle grounds. It took us around 20 mins to walk up from the old town, so not too taxing. Definitely something to tick off if you’re visiting Bratislava. Whilst it’s a nice attraction, it’s not quite as grand as some of the other castles I’ve visited in Europe and so doesn’t quite warrant 5 stars.Visited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 7 March 2023
- Ginges_revengeBrisbane, Australia4,699 contributionsNice to look at from the outside but a castle with not much substance.I didn't find to much substance to the castle and was not overly impressed with it. Yes, its nice to view from in the old town and other view points around but that was about it for me. The courtyard at the front was good and then trying to find the ticket office and something decent to see, I didn't rate it. Got some nice photos but that was about it for me.Visited February 2023Written 5 April 2023

The castle is an interesting visit and definitely recommend it. There is a lot about the history of Slovakia and Bratislava, interesting materials and a lot to see. One downside is that it could definitely use a more structured visit system (a route, for example) or better mapping. But otherwise, definitely worth a visit.

Ok to visit while in Bratislava There is free entry to the Castle grounds and gardens and the view of the Danube but not too much there to do unless you pay a visit to the museum. It’s still worth the trip in my opinion. There are different routes to reach the castle either the reasonable steep one from the Historic district or the route bus which is less steep and takes you to the main entry.

Very nice!
We really enjoyed this castle.
It’s very nice, big, clean, beautiful place with nice view from the top.
Garden was lovely..
There’s also a parking garage in beneath from which you can get to castle.

We were last here a few years ago and found that experience mildly interesting but not exceptional. This time was very different. First of all, the whole place seemed brighter and more beautiful, with everything looking newly painted and polished up. Everything just gleamed.
Secondly, the castle now offered a host of interesting and very well curated new exhibitions that featured high-quality English translations, among the best I've seen lately. Real effort appears to have been made to create displays that are appealing and understandable to the wide of visitors who walk the steep hill, hoping the end result will be worth it. Now, it definitely is.
I have to add that one of the most charming experiences here was being able to walk through so many narrow, steep (whether up or down) "atmospheric" pathways to move around the castle. It was rather like a game: "hey, wonder where THIS one will take me?!." The big payoff came, of course, when we finally reached the top and saw the beautiful of castle turrets and the glorious views of old Bratislava opening beyond, all the way to high hills beyond the urban center.
Among the exhibitions we saw, I found the small one with photos and biographies of Slovak partisan-patriots who died for their country to be very poignant and memorable. That, and all the gold: there is just heaps of it here, all very highly polished, a treat for both the eye and the imagination.
If you are travelling with children, be assured that they are welcome here, and there is a small place, just for them, that I think they will enjoy.

The castle itself isn’t all that impressive. It has been heavily renovated a number of times, was left as a ruin for years, almost demolished and then restored. It hosts the Slovakian national history museum which is pretty interesting, but that’s all there is to see inside. No period rooms, or furnishings, or things one often encounters in European castles. You can enter and walk through the castle grounds and gardens (which are very pleasant), enjoy beautiful views of the Danube and the city of Bratislava, and even enter the castle inner courtyard itself without any charge. There is an admission charge for the museum, which is the only way to get inside the rooms of the castle or to get up to the main tower. We thought that it was a worthwhile visit — particularly for the grounds and the views — and that the museum was interesting.
If you walk to the castle from Old Town, the shortest way is up the steps which start on the other side of the bridge across from St. Martin’s Cathedral, but it’s a lot of steps. It’s a bit longer walk if you take the walk along the road that circles around the castle from the north (Zamoca) but that’s a gradual incline — not steps.
There are WCs and a restaurant on the castle grounds. The museum took us about an hour. Walking the grounds and gardens was another 45 minutes.

You can visit the castle grounds for free all day and evening long. We did not go into the building itself of see the museums but they are reported to be very nice as well. We just wandered around the grounds for an evening and caught the sunset from within the walls. It’s a wonderful way to see all of the different views of the city. It's not nearly as impressive as so many of the other castles and palaces in Europe, but still a good stop to make in town.

High above the river with great views and I would take the word of the previous responder on the exact height.
There is public transportation to get there although we visited as part of an organised city tour. Walking there takes you up a steep hill
