Our First visit to the Zsolnay Museum in Pecs was around 1986 and we have been back several times over the years. This museum holds the largest and finest collection of Zsolnay pottery in the world. You can travel to Pecs by train from Budapest in about 3 hours and there is even an express that takes less time. Pecs is a college town now and still is the home to Hungary's famed Zsolnay factory. You can also visit the factory for a tour. The staff at the Museum is friendly and they sell books about the collection. They frequently hold special exibitions about facets of Zsolnay production. Pecs is a charming provincial town with fine restaurants and a center downdown square with a mosque left over from the ancient history of Pecs. Antiques shops offer Zsolnay and a wide variety of goods. Almost all is within easy walking from the center of town. Most people speak English at the restaurants, shops and hotels. A pleasant waking business street is off the main square. We would highly recommend visiting the beautiful city.

This museum is the history of the ceramics factory in Pecs. This factory made the roof tiles for St. Mattias Church in Budapest. There are many pieces of art that are worth a look. This museum does not take long to go through.

This museum was one of the highlights of Pécs, Hungary. The traditional Zsolnay designs and the more recent art nouveau pieces are spectacular. I also took a look at the factory, but it was not operational on a Sunday. It is recommended that if you want to buy any pieces that you go to the store in downtown Pécs instead of the store adjacent to the factory due to a creepy and rude proprietress.

Unfortunately, we were not allowed to enter the museum, even though we had proof of vaccination. We tried explaining the staff that we do not possess a vaccination card, but we do have a bilingual vaccination certificate on paper, because this is what Serbia provides to vaccinated residents. Noone was willing to listen and reason with us and kept repeating that we needed a vaccination card. The staff needs to be better informed on this, because Serbia and Hungary have an agreement according to which a proof of vaccination (any proof) enables tourists to 1.visit Hungary 2.visit closed spaces like museums, theaters, cafes and so on.
It's too bad we were caught on such a technicality, because a vaccination card is not what protects from covid, but a vaccine is.

I did not expect to enjoy this museum as much as I did. I found it interesting reading the history of the family and how the company ended with Communism. The porcelain products that the company produced were interesting.
Wonder through the small gift shop. They have great jewelry for sale and everyone who saw it wishes that they had purchased some.

What make this so interesting is the variety of work on view ranging from ceramic pictures to dinner sets to decorative pieces for the outside of buildings and outdoors generally. The museum is set out in timeline and shows the extraordinary development of output from a small factory which grew to become a major employer and exporter of goods to far afield. Many of the pieces on view are unusual and show clearly that a great deal of time went into experimentation and development. One of the most important techniques that was developed was the tiger technique which involved overlaying different glazes and firing in stages to produce iridescent finishes which are stunning. They brought to my mind the earlier 20th century and perhaps in some ways art nouveau movement in terms of appearance. Ie attached an example of this type of finish which is the fountain in the town square.

Doesn't really matter if you are interested n pottery, porcelain or fine arts generally, this should be top of anyone's list for Pecs. The medieval house is worth the visit in itself, but the insights you'll gain into Hungarian culture will repay every Forint of the entrance fee.

I'm not generally overexcited by porcelain, glazes etc., but I'll make an exception for this museum
