About
Built in the first half of the nineteenth century, the largest cathedral in Hungary incorporates the red marble Rakocz Chapel, a fine example of Renaissance art.

1. It is not really worth spending four hours travelling back and forth from Budapest Pest via train if you don't have enough time and you want to travel to other destinations.
2. You should drive to the Basilica of Esztergom if you want to visit there with limited time.
3. There are lots of other churches similar/ better than the Basilica of Esztergom in case you think it is really that unique
4. You can see beautiful scenery above the dome.
5. The entrance fee is not expensive and it is affordable.

We give three points to the Bazilika, mainly due to the strange system of selling tickets. Due to the Covid crisis an employee was taking our body temperatures and we asked for if we need a ticket. He said no. Thus I had to go back from the staircases to the entrance to buy a ticket which allowed us to go up. I did it. Noone said that to each and every level, exhibition organized in the same building we need a separate ticket. Thus climbed up x stairs, where again, “halt, where is your ticket?”. Bit pushed up that I should again go back to the main entrance, I made a comment that this is a bit stupid, especially that you cannot buy a related sub-sub-sub-ticket at the entrance of the specific exhibitions. The reaction was really lovely : “everything should be able to read!”. What honey? On our way out we were searching for information panels on this and found nothing.

Esztergom Basilica is enormous in size and grandeur. Its dome, which is presently undergoing restorations, shines in the sun from miles away up and down the river. The inside clearly demonstrate why Esztergom is viewed as the religious center of Hungary. It is magnificent . Even for persons who don’t like/visit churches, the views from this Basilica of the Danube Bend area are breathtaking.

I actually had the fortune of seeing the Basilica during the day on a private tour, only then to pass it three days later and night…and that was a spectacular sight!

Definitely schedule a couple of hours away from Budapest to view church or, if only cruising the river close by, make sure that you keep your eyes out for it…you can’t miss it…and shouldn’t!

The Esztergom Basilica / Cathedral is really big. The rotunda is under construction inside so you cannot get an excellent view of it.
Otherwise, it looks really nice.
Entrance was free of charge.

Thanks to a previous review we easily found the Cat Steps for the quick route up to the Basilica. Unfortunately our cruise stopped on a Sunday morning and there was a mass being held so we couldn’t enter the Basilica. Even so we still enjoyed the views.

Hungary's greatest church. You need to see this min. once in a lifetime. It is an exceptional historical and religious edifice.
From the sub-churc to the towers panorama terrace, together with the church's museum is a great relic of the history.

My husband and I were docked in Komarom while visiting the capitals of Eastern Europe. According to available information, Komaron became divided into two towns: Slovakian Komarom on the north side and Hungarian Komarom located opposite. The two towns are connected by the Elizabeth Bridge.

The magnificent Esztergam Cathedral lies on the bank of the Danube river which forms the border with Slovakia. The ruined royal palace on the hilltop overlooking the Danube is overshadowed by the incredibly beautiful domed cathedral. The basilica was consecrated in 856. It has a cupola that is 230 feet high and has seating for 8000 worshippers.

My husband took the most amazing pictures with the bridge and Danube in the forefront, the cathedral center, and the hilltop royal palace peaking out to the right. This is definitely a must visit attraction.

We were lucky 🍀 to have a beautiful day when we had a 2 hour stop on our river cruise in September. From the dock we took the cat steps up (need to be more mountain goat 🐐 it’s the hard way up). It’s not particularly well signposted so used Google maps. Lots of renovations going on. But the views are spectacular.

The basilica is huge and we had already seen it from some kilometres away. After arriving in Esztergom we parked under the Valeria bridge, so we saw it from the bottom and then walked uphill towards the basilica. Yes, it is really huge! The interior is really wonderful; you need no ticket to visit the church. Don’t miss it if you’re somewhere near Esztergom.

The seat of Catholicism in Hungary.Building it started in 1822 and took nearly 50 years to complete.
I'm led to believe that not only is it the largest church in the Country, but also the tallest.
Currently getting renovated this summer(2022) inside and out,it's a sight to behold.
