We would have liked to enter the castle but the museum cashier insisted we had to pay the entrance fee in cash only. This was after us having to wait some time for her to finish a lengthy telephone call. The option of a card payment would seem correct for such a historic location and it is unfortunate that there was no such possibility. The cashier's rude and surly attitude discouraged us from finding a nearby ATM. On top of that a gentleman touting himself as a guide shooed us away when we tried to take photos of the view outside.

Entrance tickets have gone up to (hold yourself) 3.600 HUF! What a joke... Like others have said it's okay-ish but that's it really. Best to visit the castle part itself after 17:00 when prices drop like a rock because the galeries are closed.

Eger Castle is a significant place in Hungarian history. Recent renovations and improvements mean that visitors will have an unforgettable experience immersing into this period of the Country. Displays, volunteers providing authentic experience and interactive shows together with an enchanting movie compete the experience. An all day fun for the whole family adults and children alike.

Not a must do activity here.
Not a great deal actually to see.
1800 HUF pp thus seemed expensive to me. Why also does the entrance ticket office not have the price(s) clearly displayed for prospective patrons?
There was a re-enactment of a rifle firing but how a non Hungarian visitor would know about this and its timing; is again lost on the management here.
I wish them well with their slow refurbishments but I left wondering why I had paid to enter.

The castle is big and beautifully located at the top of a hill overlooking Eger. We have been to a lot of castles over time with our two children (6 and 8 years old) and were hoping it would have an child friendly and interactive character. Although it is very informative and beautifully restored it is less suited for small children due to the lack of interactive displays. In addition, some parts are under construction and thus not accessible. All in all it was pretty, but to our opinion not great when visiting with small children and costly for what it offert us.

Although the interior of the castle is really poorly signed, the outer walls have been restored to an amazing point and are really picturesque. However, due to poor signage, we almost missed the cool exhibit on medieval torture devices. And, it’s possible that we missed other exhibits too. The entrance fee is not unreasonable and since they authorities are clearly doing a ton of work on the castle, it felt like money well spent.

Easy to find, just follow the road signs for the Castle (or Var).
Parking is free on the outside walls of the Castle.
Ticket is 2400 HUF (6 EUR) for Adult person. And Discounted Entry (between the ages of 6-26 and 62-70) is1200 HUF (3 EUR).
It's a very nice complex with lot of area to explore and the view of Eger city from the top is amazing. There are a few shops for snacks and coffee, located before the entrance to the Castle. But you can bring your own food also.
Also there are 2 souvenir vending machines. And you should visit the museum also inside the walls.

Went for a evening walk to explore Eger and the castle I was amazing on how tall it was and also how well maintained. The stairs were fun to climb making it worth the view at the top. A must see when you visit Eger

Despite the fact that there was quite a lot of restoration work going on while I was there, I really enjoyed my visit to Eger Castle. The view of the town was splendid and both the weapons museum and the castle history museum were excellent.

The fort itself is as beautiful as it has been for many decades. But the visitor system has changed and not for the better.
The ground used to be free to visit and only the exhibitions needed ticket. Now everything is chargeable and the system is confusing too. The walk around tickets are available late afternoon for a couple of hours only. Groups can’t use their own guide has to hire one from the fort, which limits availability greatly.
An other thing that annoyed me in particular was the signs everywhere. There are huge signs on literally everywhere saying The Government of Hungary spent X amount on preserving things. It is part of our culture, history, preserving is their job. Doesn’t need to be advertised that they are doing their job. What makes it even worse what the small print: it is EU money, not even theirs.
I would still recommend visiting it at least once.
