Budapest was initially not top of my tour through Central Europe. Out of Berlin, Prague, Salzburg, Vienna…Budapest was by far my favorite city. The skyline, history and multitude of things to do will keep you busy for at least 5 days.

This vast beautiful square next to the Parliament is a great place for a stroll or for relaxing.
It provides a serene escape from the hectic streets.
The only somehow disturbing aspect of the square is the over-the-top military guards of the flag pole.

1. You cannot classify this square if it is in France or in Budapest because it is very clean, very decent and the lightnings shining upon the Hungarian Parliament Buildings are magnificent.
2. If you love taking picture , definitely go to the Kossuth Lajos Square and you can even take decent pictures with your iPhone at night with decent lightnings in the park.

Of course visit the parliament building which is the primary attraction on the square. But also take the time to find the small museum/memorial to the 1956 uprising. I can't find a separate listing for this on TA--there is a Memorial to the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence, but that is something else and not in Kossuth square.
My father was in the square when this event took place. I wish he had lived to see this memorial. It is underground and it gives you the feeling of slowly sinking in to events that for most tourists are unknown or forgotten. You may only visit for a short time, or you might stay for quite a while as my family did. There are first hand accounts compiled in videos along with photos, and a timeline to explain the events. There are some interesting audio-visual effects including a 3D tank hurling towards the viewer.
Also interesting to note is that until recently the area in front of and around the parliament building was a parking lot for the MPs! Now it is a lovely place to walk and remember events from a tragic time.

It could be viewed that we are "bias" somewhat living in Budapest - District v, and showering accolades on this square in my writing. In the past (18) eighteen months we seen Kossuth Lajos Square enhanced and bought back further in time with the substantial works that where undertaken. The beautiful reconstructed building returned in architectural sameness of period to surrounding buildings, that sits above the metro entrance/arrival location, from a felled empty site we have what is there for all to admire. The craftsmanship - skills of all who contributed to the re-birth of this building deserving of appreciation and gratitude. Looking at it note the marriage of the entire block that gives the impression they all built at a similar time which is not the case. The redevelopment of the square, standing with your back to Parliament, in the far right corner, containing a new sandstone statue, and substantially opens up this small square from its previous design of the square. This adds additional joy to this entire historical beautiful area / part of this majestic City of Budapest. Strolling the entire Parliament area walking front looking out over up and down the Danube, the views are somewhat panoramic containing all aspects that make Kossuth Lajos Square a very special place to visit. This is assisted by the various forms of public transport that travel to and through and around it, not forgetting the public ferry that has a quay practically in front of Parliament to use if you wish to come by ferry. Love it - enjoy it as we do living in this splendid City of Budapest.

This giant square surrounding the Parliament is peppered with monuments honoring great Hungarian statesmen, artists, and anonymous victims of past regimes (underfoot is a memorial to the 1956 Uprising, during which protesters were gunned down on this very square).
The square is fronted by the Museum of Ethnography. While its collection of Hungarian folk artifacts is good, the building is even more notable. To the right, the Ministry of Agriculture was the second runner-up for the Parliament. Often at this plaza, costumed soldiers appear on the front steps for a brief "changing of the guard" ceremony set to recorded music..... another very new patriotic custom.
In short, you cannot miss this square if you are in Budapest, because it is adjacent to the Parliament building, the most important and magnificent building of the city. It is worth walking through this square, if only to enjoy the beauty of the architecture of the buildings surrounding this square.

The square named after Kossuth Lajos is the square in front of the amazing Hungarian Parliament building. In the center of the square, an honor guard of soldiers is stationed next to a mast on which the Hungarian flag is hoisted. Around the square there are some very impressive sculptures (among them is also the statue of Kossuth Lajos after which the square is named) and many designed buildings. A site that is highly recommended NOT 2 B MISSED.

We visited this large, significant city square adjacent to the main entrance of the Hungarian Parliament House’s main entrance, with intention of just getting another view of the Parliament building.
By good luck, the timing of our visit happened to coincide with the “changing of the guard” ceremony. When we arrived, there were two sentries slowly marching in unison around the large flagpole bearing the Hungarian flag. However, the main action in relation to changing the guard occurred in the portico at the main entrance to the parliament house. It was only a short ceremony involving just a few guards but it was interesting to see.
After viewing the ceremony, we took the opportunity to look at the various statues and sculptures located around the square and of course, to snap a few photos of the imposing parliament house.
Another feature of the square which we found to be of interest to us was the reflection pool located on the edge of the square just beyond the large flagpole.
This square is certainly a “must-visit” location because of its significance in Hungarian modern history and to also to see the parliament house. You will also have the opportunity to enjoy the various statues and monuments, situated in and around the square.

Kossuth Square is a city square in the Lipotvaros neighbourhood of Budapest on the banks of Danube. Its most notable landmark is the Hungarian Parliament Building. There is a station of the M2 (east-West) line of Budapest Metro as well as a stop for the scenic Tram No. 2.
In the second half of the 19th century, great public buildings were erected on square and it became the symbolic center of the Hungarian State.
The square was closed in 1912 by a decision of the Parliament in order to restore its pre-1944 view. It was reopened in 2014 as a no-traffic zone with a beautiful park, new tracks for tram no. 2, an underground parking garage, sculptures, and a memorial to the victims of the Kossuth Ter massacre on 25th October 1956.
It is a beautiful square with lot of bars and restaurants in nearby lanes. One can sit on a bench facing Danube and watch the world go by for hours.
