Natural underground limestone tunnels or caves network, as extensive as what is existing in Budapest was not something I was aware of until I visited one such - the Szemlo-Hegyi Barlang so close to the capital. It was an easy access to the location travelling by public bus. There were tours arranged on a set time table and prior to commencement a fine screen presentation was held in a projection room to familiarise with what was to be seen with our own eyes a little while later. Presentation and explanations by the guide was in English and it was very clear and interesting. Caves themselves were exciting as they were having natural geological formations and Calcium based minerals developed that may have taken millions of years to reach the current status. There were limestone formations and shapes resembling corals in the sea or imaginary solidified fireworks, pop corns or cauliflowers.

After descending through a passage the temperature in the corridors of the caves were cool but manageable. Interesting formations were lit up so as the path way to guide the visitors. The limestone cave at Szemlo-Hegyi of Budapest was smaller to some other caves I have visited before but somewhat exciting.

After seeing the good reviews, I went to check it out. The tour was 40 minutes long (20 minutes in, 20 minutes back), but the return trip was along the same path so there was no extra information. The "guide" carried a flashlight and didn't say a word. Instead, we had to use one of those audio guide things which talked forever and was very dry and boring. I got way more information from a real geologist who was on the tour.

We walked / got a bus from the centre of Budapest as part of a half term break this February with children. It really is out of town but worth the trip. There were only 6 of us on the 13:00n tour (4 in my family!) and 2 others. Although it seems to be run by volunteers, the man running the cafe and the woman running the tour were superb and very friendly and knowledgable. It's not really touristy but that is part of its charm. The tour was 45 mins and we learned a lot - it was suitable for all ages. Highly recommended.

A bit expensive but lucky for us they gave us the student price. You receive an audioguide that explains a bit about the caves. It is about 40min, but the caves are not very big. Easily accessible inside the caves as the path is made of cement. Slightly outside the center, but a bus stop is found nearby.

This tour was amazing and stared off a new family hobby. 3-D video was included and interesting-but I don’t know if they usually offer English showtimes (the rest of my family understands Hungarian). The tour was about 40 minutes long- the perfect amount of time to see if your family is interested. The path was relatively easy to walk just be sure to bring a light sweatshirt even in the summer because the caves are always 11C. The audio guide was great as well and I was able to keep along nicely by just guessing the next number when the tour began to move.

The cave walking tour was probably my favorite activity while in Budapest! I’m not sure why it wasn’t more popular considering it is only at 15 cab ride from the city. It was super well laid out and with a great guide. The caves were amazing and well lit so you can take great pictures. We even saw a few bats sleeping. Cost was 7000 Ft per person for 3 hours of tour of two caves. It was well worth it. My 71 year old mom loved it and she is usually not impressed with anything. Be aware that the walking tour still does involve climbs of around 200 steps and a few very steep ladders. Some at even slippery conditions.

To book we went to caving.hu and emailed them for the English tour. I had to pay through PayPal.

Really amazing cave tour, with a little chalet type cafe onsite so you can wait to the tour to start! Our guide was really friendly, the tour done in English luckily for us but audioguides were available for other languages. There was only 7 of us on the tour, but he made sure to pause regularly and allow us our own time to investigate! He was very knowledgeable, detailling different formations and types of erosion throughout, as well as lots of jokes! The caves were incredible, we even saw some bat's. The absolute darkness for the first time in our lives, turning the lights off so we could truly expeirence the caves. Can't recommend this enough! Don't worry with arranged tours, you can book them online for such a fair price!

Easy to get to independently by bus. No need to get organised tour and probably better and cheaper if you dont. Only 4 with our guide. Easy to walk around. Few steps. Rock formations from hot water that now feeds the spas different from normal staligtites and staligmites.
Interesting guide who spoke good english. Very good value if you go independently especially with combined ticket to other local cave 20 mins walk away.

I had such a terrible horrible experience here and wasted 3 hours of my day.

It took me 1 hour to get here today and I was really looking forward to the cave tour. I even went on a weekday in the morning because I know weekends can get very crowded.

First of all, the tour was delayed because we were waiting on a big group. 15 minutes after the tour was scheduled to begin, the big group of about 30 people finally arrived and they were loud, were playing music, and some of the people in the group were even drunk!

I talked to the tour guide about this and he was AWARE that people in the group were drunk. Yet he still allowed them to go on the tour. I was shocked because many children go on this tour and this is unacceptable. Either way, this is extremely disrespectful behavior and the tour guides let it happen.

Throughout the tour, I could not hear the tour guide because the group was so loud. I even tried to stand next to the tour guide but had trouble hearing because of the group. And when I tried to go to the front multiple times, the group was pushing and shoving to get to the front too so I got really tired of trying to make my way to the front every time we moved to the next room. I talked to the tour guide about this after and he accused me of lying about not being able to hear over the loud group.

I‘ve wasted my time and money here and am disappointed because I could have gone to the Labyrinth or anywhere else to spend my time and money.

When I talked to the staff about this, they blamed the group and said there was nothing they could do. The staff did not do anything and did not take ownership or responsibility. However, I told the company that they could have done a better job at organizing the groups but instead they allowed 50 people go in at once and the drunk tourists too. It ruined the experience because the cave is not that big so overall, you are stuck with a large group of a bunch of Loud drunk tourists who are taking selfies the entire time.

I was very frustrated that the tour guides would not do anything to make my experience here better even though I asked politely. When the staff could not think of any way to improve the experience, I offered several suggestions for reimbursement because the services did not meet what was promised. I kindly asked if there was any way they could reimburse me for transportation as I spent 2+ hours through walking and public transport to get there from the outskirts of the city as a tourist. They kept avoiding responsibility and condescendingly told me that this was a "very inexpensive" trip although they were unaware of my budget and circumstances as a young woman without any income.

I am not one to complain but I had such a bad time here and I would highly NOT recommend anyone to come here.
