Up into the sun

We entered the pleasantly heated wagon on an especially cold and foggy day. We ascended over the clouds into the sunny heights and went on to have a beautiful spring day!

This was used more by locals than tourists when we ascended the hill. It is more functional than comfortable, as it is a very jerky movement. Sit on the right hand side and facing backwards when going up the hill for the best views back over Budapest. The railway is included in the Budapest travel card, which is excellent value... More

As a diversion we decided to take the cog wheel up to the Buda Hills. It was good value for money at 350 forints each way and nice to escape from the city for an hour or so. There isn't a great deal at the top other than the chance to walk around the area which at the time of... More

Used the cog railway to get to the Childrens Railway in the Budapest Hills. Quick and cheap way to get up into the hills above Budapest.

The cog-wheel railway is now part of the main BKK tram network - tram 60. It was raining so we just took the train for a round trip to nowhere. (We had already bought 72hr passes, for 8250Ft). However there are some other things visitors can enjoy too - but better when it's not raining: these are the children's railway... More

Took a while to find. Especially trying to understand the map at the exit of Szel Kalman ter Metro station. There are two. One in a larger scale than the other. Note, both are orientated differently so it's not easy to follow. Basically, as you exit the metro take the road that runs to the right and away from the... More

Having been to Budapest countless times I was looking for something different for a family day and opted for the cog-wheel + children railway and it was just a stunning day! Reached the cog-wheel with bus 5 stopping at Varosmajor and the ride was included in my 15 day pass then bought a one-way ticket for children railway 700 huf... More

A trip with the cogwheel railway (which is an interesting technical solution to ride steep grade railways) should absolutely be combined with a ride in the Children's Railway, which is a railway (with normal sized trains) operated by children. So, it should be easy to convince children to take the cogwheel railway as well...

As this railway is classed as tram #60, it is covered by your weekly, or whatever travel pass. Best way to get there is by Metro 2 to Szell Kalman Ter, then any of these trams 56A, 59, or 61 in the direction of Varosmajor, which is the terminus of the Cogwheel Railway. (It sounds complicated, but it really isn't).... More
