In the Hungarian name of the bridge Erzsébet, the name Elizabeth or simply Sissy is poorly guessed. Even worse is the semantic connection between this modern bridge and the name of the beloved Empress in Hungary more than in Austria, where she would have to be next to her husband Franz Joseph. The bridge began to be built in the year of Sissi's murder in Geneva in 1898 and was completed 5 years later. However, as it is not difficult to guess, this bridge does not look 120 years old. Quite different from the neighboring Chain Bridge of Sechen. But at the time of construction they were similar. Erzebet was also chained. The bridge of Empress Sisi, a native of Bavaria, was blown up by her countrymen in January 1945, retreating under the blows of the Red Army from Pest to Buda. It did not save the Wehrmacht, but the bridge was thoroughly destroyed. So much so that it was the only one not restored to its former form. The bridge was restored later than the rest of the Budapest bridges in 1964 and made not chain, but hanging. With a higher throughput, it weighed 2 times less. Bridge construction has progressed so much in 60 years. Due to the fact that the famous Sechenyi Bridge is currently under reconstruction, Erzsebet is in fact the only way to get from the center of Pest to the Buda Fortress. Margit is still a little far away.

Named in honor of Queen Elizabeth of Bavaria, the Elisabeth Bridge was rebuilt in 1961-1964 after the original bridge was destroyed during WWII. It is built in a modern and minimalist style as would be expected during the communist era. It does not have the personality or history of the other bridges in Budapest that span the Danube.

With the Chain Bridge being closed when we visited we had to walk across Elisabeth Bridge to get to Buda Hill funicular and up to Fisherman's Bastion. You also come out just off the bridge when you walk down Vaci Street.
It was a busy bridge traffic wise (presumably more so being as the Chain Bridge is closed) but was fine to walk across it. The yellow trams also go across it so we got some quirky pictures in between the traffic!

This beautiful white bridge, connecting Buda and Pest over the Danube river is especially beautiful after dark, when it is stunningly illuminated over the dark waters of the river.
We crossed it several times and the views from it are just wonderful.

We liked this bridge. The best photos to get of it are from the steps leading up to the citadel. About halfway up and night and you've got yourself a great pic. Thank me later with a helpful vote. Hee hee. Love this bridge.

This white bridge, connecting Buda with Pest, remains beautiful whether you decide to cross it, or if you choose to gaze at it from afar.

This is one of several impressive bridges crossing the Danube river, you can get a good view from the hill behind it, it's very much worth climbing up for a peek!

This steel bridge spanning (290meters) the Danube river is named after Elisabeth of Bavaria, Queen of the Austro Hungarian Empire 1837-1898, From our point of view it is a fairly plain bridge, (serving its purpose), however, it comes alive at night. Awesome piccies to be had.

During the second world war all the bridges crossing the River Danube were destroyed and all repaired post war and Elsabeth Bridge is one such bridge.
Not as famous or pretty as the amazing Chain Bridge or Liberty Bridge it's well worth checking out and walking across .
We walked across this bridge on a blustery Saturday morning and it certainly blew away the cobwebs from the previous nights excesses when we had visited some amazing craft beer bar's.
A nice bridge and well worth checking out.
