It is truly disheartening that the city does not do any work to allow the public to take a glimpse at the Roman ruins under the square, as the glass covering them is completely opaque.

This location (at Marcius 15. ter, a park on the east bank of the Danube), was the site of a small rectangular fortress across the Danube from the Roman City of Aquincum (hence its name, Contra Aquincum). Some archaeological remains are under a glass housing (regrettably, largely opaque). Low stone blocks and a paved walkway retrace the reconstructed ground plan of the northern gate of the fortress. The main site of the 1st to 4th century Roman fort and town of Aquincum, are in the appropriately-named neighborhood of Aquincum, about 8km north of this site, across the river in Budapest. That site has much more extensive ruins and reconstructions, plus a museum. Contra Aquincum is accessible at all times with no entry fee.

Even if this site had anything to display, the glass on the floor of the square is so opaque, which means you cannot see anything.

This was high on my to-do list for our Budapest trip. We got the 20 minute or so train out to the site which is just about 200mt from the station. We visited the museum 1st which seemed more about general roman history than specific to Aquincum but was very interesting. They have millions of artefacts (fastest growing collection in Hungary) but can only display a few thousand at a time and the quality of those was spectacular. Whilst very interesting I was under pressure to move on as wife and children sat around waiting for me having paid not so close attention to the artefacts. The same happened out in the site which is huge and it is definitely reminiscent of Pompeii. The site needs guided tours like those at Pompeii as it was difficult to interpret and the information panels were difficult to follow. Nonetheless we spent many hours there. They have about 500mt of outside storage for artefacts too with just 25% of the site excavated.
