The area
Neighbourhood: District VII / Jewish Quarter
District VII is the very heart of Budapest and houses the city’s Jewish Quarter. Its streets are lively and colorful, its buildings narrate different histories in an assortment of architectural styles, and its cafes and bars are frequented and loved by the enthusiastic crowds. Grand and magnificent, the striking star of the district is the Great Synagogue, the largest in Europe and one of the biggest in the world. Distinctly Moorish in style, crowned by the twin onion shaped domes, the Synagogue is the very emblem of District VII and one of the main attractions in the capital.

It was the street where we had the accomodation. Full of shops snd locals, pubs, cafes. Very busy on Friday and Saturday evening especially. Nice walk along the street, very good for shopping or having lunch, drinks or dinner.

Kiraly utca ("Royal Street") is a delight to stroll. Walk its entire length, simply enjoying the souvenir shops, cafes, pubs, and restaurants. Traditionally, it is the Jewish district of the city, but today this part named Elisabeth District and it is one of the most authentic parts of Budapest with a great number of small boutiques and big shops. We stayed here at great apartment complex 7Seasons Apartments. I recommend this place to everyone, who want to have all in one - great location with the couple steps to the main Metro station - Deak Ferenc Ter, wonderful service, and the best value.
The street has couple private groceries stores and big supermarket Spar at corner Erzsebet Krt. At the beginning of the street located a currency exchange with a very good exchange rate (here is always a queue). Near this street is leafy Elizabeth Square, also just 100 meters from Kiraly is the main shopping street Vaci utca. Don't miss typical inner yards at Klauzal utca (in the middle of Kiraly) with antique market every weekends. So you don't must go here to explore but you have to stay here because this is the most convenient location.

Parallel to the very swish Andrassy Ut (St), Kiraly Ut - at least between Erszebet Krt (Bvd) & Deak Ferenc Ter (Sq): the section most people talk about – is very down to earth, but much more interesting in its way. It is full of everyday eating places. We have spent 4 weeks in apartments just around the corner & went along every day.
The corner with Erzsebet Krt has a very handy Spar shop, open till around 10pm. The next corner is Liszt Ferenc Ter, where you find the very fine & recently restored, Art Nouveau, Liszt Academy building. This is the home of one of the world’s top music schools, part of Budapest University. You can often hear students practising from the various windows. Except for (rather expensive) tours the inside is normally closed to the public. However there are regular evening concerts in their main performance hall by international classical artists & in May & June final exam concerts given by graduating students, which are open to the public & free. See zeneacademia.hu.
The restaurants on Liszt Ferenc Ter itself are really only for the tourists & over-priced. Down KIraly Ut you find a much better selection of differing restaurants: including the very friendly & inexpensive Frici Papa Restaurant. When we first visited, 5 years ago, we saw people queuing outside a pizza take-away right opposite St Teresa’s Catholic Church, a little further towards the city centre. Intrigued we eventually joined the queue & bought two huge pizza slices for 60p (£0.60) each! Not only the cheapest – it was the best pizza we’d ever tasted. We’ve been back many times since - though prices have risen. It’s now 250Ft (£0.75).
Further again towards to city centre you come to the Jewish area, which spreads to either side of Kiraly Ut & full of interesting places. In the centre of this there used to be an good (Gouba) Sunday Craft Market in side alleyways. Sadly this appears to have declined over the years to a single row of rather tatty stalls along Gozsdu Udvar (Walk). It’s worth a half hour, but not much more these days, & if you want to eat or drink, walk 30 meters away to do so much more cheaply & quietly.

Busy street! There is a money exchange here and there is always a queue! Helpful Spar supermarket! We purchased some bottled water here! They have a funny scheme to label fizzy car animated water and still water! Lid colours.... pink if you want still water.

Would be a much better street and experience if the waitors/waitresses tried some customer service classes. It is REALLY BAD.
Get your act together guys. Its the worst service I have ever experienced.

Heart of the city, you could walk down to the city center and have amazing eateries and bars in close proximity.

Király street is stretching from Elizabeth square to Lövölde square, and Teréz körút cuts it into two parts. The first part is from Elizabeth square to Teréz körút is the party district. Full of bars, pubs, ruin pubs, and every opportunity to get drunk. Really drunk. Just ask the people, who are unlucky enough to live there. Here is the famous Gozsdu udvar (Gozsdu court), the Spitz and Burger, the Spot, the Kuplung, the Fajny pub and the Cooltour Bar 2. Until midnight these places are quite all right. The uncontrolled heavy drinking starts later on.
The other part of the street starts right away with a striptease bar, and a few meters away is a sex shop. If you're hungry for something else, there is a Pizza Hut, a Starbucks Coffee, a Chinese and a Vietnamese fast food place, etc. My favorite is the Orange Kebab Turkish bistro. How in the earth can someone make such a silly name? Combine the kebab with the orange? Small shops are so close together that it's almost confusing. Somehow it reminds me of a bazaar. One thing for sure. Király Street can be famous but isn't in the middle of my heart.

Our hotel was close by so we took advantage of this area for cafes and bars. Seemed perfectly safe to walk, we especially enjoyed the ‘ruin bars’ in this area - just Google them! Choices galore, both food and drink.

I was there with a friend of mine and we always went to those expensive restaurants for tourists. Our meal cost around 8-10000 HUF which was cheap comparing restaurant prices in Norway. I was recommended of a Hungarian to visit some restaurants there. They have amazing foods, cheap drink and great customer service! A dinner cost around 1000 HUF or maybe less.
Recommended place if you want to taste Hungarian foods in that street

A very central street, packed with hotels, restaurants, cafes and bars. Should be one of the first places you visit in Budapest. This is one of the most alive places I saw and taste in Budapest.
