I've traveled around Slovenia enough to say that Radovljica is probably its most enchanting village. The historic center is entirely concentrated on the rectangular square of Linhart, overlooked by beautiful historic buildings, some of which have been transformed into charming hotels. And then, restaurants, shops and museums. From the terraces you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Julian Alps. The town is easily and comfortably reachable by train, being on the Jesenice Ljubljana line.

After a stay in Slovenia Bled, which was very positive, we wanted to visit the small town of Radovljica on Recommendation.
On the positive side, a free parking space was possible directly at the entrance to the village in the left and right area for 3 hours, while the middle area is reserved for locals.
The cute little buildings and the facades were also positive. The church at the end of the pedestrian zone was very nice and overall it is visually a very special old place.
Only the people who live/work there in no way reflect Slovenia and this delightful place as we experienced Slovenia. Waiters, sellers in the shops are visibly annoyed by tourism. No matter what shop/coffee you went to, everyone was annoyed and rude.
One lady even rolled her eyes when I kindly asked her if I could look at something that was for sale in the display.
In a coffee we were there we just stared stubbornly into a computer and did not pay attention to us (optically very dear old coffee with many lollies and hearts).
And other stores were also unfriendly and obviously annoyed.
After 1 h we saw everything and drove again without souvenir and coffee.
Nice old place but not worth a trip, after 1/2 hour you saw everything.
Should have stayed longer in Bled.

Most of the little European towns/ villages are beautiful and picturesque, and Radov is one of the prettiest I have seen. It's tiny little decorated shops, the flowers in the balconies, the view of the mountains, the gorgeous Church and some amazing little restaurants. It's a must stop place between Ljubljana & Bled.

Radovljica Old Town is a small quaint Medieval town worth a visit if you are in the area. It is one of the Slovenia's best-conserved medieval towns.
The town plan was laid in the 13th century, but the most prolific period of building was the 16th century. Walk among the Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque mansions and arcaded courtyards. Meander the streets and admire the frescoes adorning many facades and small windows and portals built from green stone.
Attractions within this area include a gingerbread museum, a beekeeper museum, a municipal museum, and dozens of shops, pubs, and restaurants. We had lunch at one of the historic inns.

Radovljica’s old town is one of the best preserved medieval town structures in Slovenia with houses dating from 15th and 16th century. It is strategically located on top a natural promontory, with a varied selection of authentically preserved architecture, as well as museums, galleries and other attractions.
Must-sees include: ( and these are all located convenient to one another)
The Radovljica Mansion a beautifully renovated manor with a Baroque hall, where concerts, receptions, weddings and other events are held. This beautiful building also houses the Municipality Museum representing life and work of an important 18th century Slovene Anton Tomaž Linhart, born in Radovljica and also the
Museum of Apiculture offering wonderful insights into the rich history of Slovene beekeeping tradition (1st floor of Radovljica Mansion). In the same building there is also the Šivec House Art Gallery one of the best examples of late Gothic urban architecture in Slovenia.
On the same street there is the Live Gingerbread Workshop living museum, where you can get a guided tour and explanation in English and other languages and see staff producing the red traditional gingerbread hearts.
Close by the Gothic church of St Peter and various church buildings. An awesome set of structures.
The Tourist office is near the entrance from the new town..
Surrounding the old town is the remains of medieval defence system with the only remaining town moat in Slovenia. Thee are viewing points along the wall where you can see the surrounding area
There are regular public bus routes to Radovljica. The town is connected with the surrounding area and all major towns in Slovenia. There are buses driving regulary from Ljubljana to Bled via through Kranj and also from Bohinj, Jesenice.and Kranjska Gora
There is also Hop on Hop off bus available in July and August.

We walked to the Old Town several times during our stay. We enjoyed several restaurants and an ice cream shop. We especially enjoyed the Thursday night evening street fair. Our family enjoyed a few drinks, some ice cream and the music.

This is a lovely, well kept town. Truly worth a visit. If time permits, visit the church and wonderful gingerbread shop. We also had a fantastic dinner in the evening at gostilna Kunstelj that has been around since the 1800’s. Just a beautiful, picturesque town...

We are planning to visit Radovljica in early October for 3 or 4 nights. We will be coming by bus or train from Salzburg, and will not have a car. In addition to Lake Bled, what other interesting places are in this area that we should plan to visit? We also plan to spend some time in Ljubljana, so are trying to divide our time (and the attractions) between the two places. Thanks for your help.

Radovljica, Slovenia
Charlene,
there are many possibilities, but it depends what kind of attractions or maybe experiences would you wish to see and have. First thing is: in Ljubljana you will meet a lot of culture, monuments, museums and a very lively spirit of the town. In Radovljica and nearby, you will experience beautiful nature, calmnes, small towns.
Near Bled, don't miss Vintgar Gorge, and if you are looking for more natural sights, a day trip to Bohinj lake is a good idea. This tree places will probalby take you 1,5 - 2 days, then of course Radovljica Old town with museums and maybe also Kropa (with rich ironforging history) or Škofja Loka, another beautiful medieval town on the way to Ljubljana. If you prefer some walks into the nature, it would be the best to stop at Tourist information in Radovljica where you can get a map of easy hiking trails. Every tuesday morning we also offer a free guided tour of Radovljica old town.
If you will be travelling by bus and you want to get the most out of your visit in Slovenia, maybe you can consider joining one of organized groups on their trips to Soča Valley or seaside. Our suggestion are Nature Adventures (you can find them on tripadvisor aswel). They can pick you up in Radovljica area as well. Soča valley is defiinately a very beautiful place and autumn months can be amazing there (as are in other natural environments).
