The sightseeing takes up to two hours and starts in Malecnik (10 minutes drive from the centre of Maribor) at the parish church of St. Peter. In 2015 the catacombes have been opened to the visitors. The church was first mentioned in documents dating to 1236, but the current building is Baroque (built in 1740).
The way passes fourteen renewed chapels from 1847 and leads to Gorca hill. In front of the second station, there is a stone pyramid monument, erected in 1817 in memory of a priest who died on this very spot on his way to Gorca. The final chapel stands in the cemetery around the Gothic church. The paintings are the work of art of an Austrian painter from Graz J. Tunner. Today you can see them in the church.
The church on top of winegrowing hill has a beautiful view of the area around the city of Maribor. It was built in 1517 and fortified by a wall until 1820. The church interior was painted by Giacomo Brollo and Tomasso Fantoni, following a design by a Graz painter Tendler. The murals show scenes of Mary’s life. The main altar dates to the 19th century and was made in the workshop of master Kainz.
The main pilgrimage event is on September 8.
The nearest restaurant with accommodation offer is Motel and Pizzeria Crni Baron (Black Baron), located only few minutes walk to the church The owner is also an excellent source of information concerning the way. If you are a group I recommend to ask the owner of Black baron to organise the guidance for you. Both churches are usually closed.

A beautiful Stations of the Cross with brick chapels along the way, leading to a beautiful hill on Gorca (Malečnik) with a view of Maribor and Pohorje. The Gothic Church of St Mary awaits us at the top. Worth a visit.

From distance it is perfect. It looks as Gothic church on the hill. But it was rebuilt and changed several times. Main changes are from the last two centuries. Even walking up is not difficult it is pleasant. But pictures in the chapels and in the church are second hand mixture. The church, as we call it Marija na Gorci, is overfilled with decorations, paintings, sculptures. Main altar is the best but you are confused – from old chairs, lamps to pictures all around. It is hard to contemplate and to devote completely to God.
