I've visited many cemetaries around the world when on holiday as I like to read the words on the stones, but Zale Cemetary was unlike any I'd visited before!

From the very beginning when you enter, all you see is large family plots with many names listed on the headstones going back to the 1800s.

It was ridiculously clean & tidy & well kept with many workers sweeping & cleaning while we were there.

Which ever direction you walk in, it goes on & on & on until you've had enough.

I was trying to find the "old" part with older, marble stones that weren't part of a family plot, but I couldn't really find any.

Maybe in Slovenia, the family plot is the only way they do it?

Worth a visit.

Recommended to go here by a waiter for its Plecnic architecture. A 30 min walk from city centre on a boiling hot day. Very interesting cemetary. 93 acres. Lovely setting, and contains Slovenia's great and good. Well worth an hour of your time. Came across the grave of Sfanko Premrl, who appeara ro have written the countries National Anthem!

Death is just one part of life. Make sure you exploit it before the end. Make others happy and you will be too.

Zale Cemetery is one of the best in Europe and well maintained. It is spread in very vast area and amazing. Zele itself is a beautiful area. Take Bus #2 from Kolodvor towards Zelena Jama and get down at Zale (4 stops) and walk 4 minutes through the very beautiful landscape to the Zele Cemetery.

Žale are same place of remembrance as year ago. Memory and memorials, flowes and candels are around the visitors on this biggest cemetery of Slovenia. Tourist stop at Plečnik's Žale, locals go on to the graves. Visit is free for all. You need a guide to show you the best sculptures and design. All graves with names are on the net.

Lovely ornamental entrance and great statues and memorials throughout, not your average cemetery. Definitely worth a trip away from the city centre and look out for some lovely views of the mountains.

A huge and very peaceful cemetery in the outskirts of Ljubljana with a few beautiful grave monuments, old headstones and small chapels. The most striking monument is the ornamental entrance gate by the great architect Plečnik. You can get here easily by bus from Ljubljana centre.

Architect Plečnik created here a unique place, where the sorrow can give place to consolation and hope. Bright whiteness of pillars and originality of little chapels make this place much less sad.
