About
A place where technical heritage and nature tell many great stories…Behind the gates of a former Carthusian monastery you can find Slovenia’s largest museum – The Technical Museum of Slovenia. It is located in the most beautiful natural surroundings on the outskirts of Ljubljana. Several collections can be seen in the museum: from forestry, woodworking, hunting, fishing and agricultural departments, to textiles, printing, traffic and electrical engineering. The attention of most visitors is drawn towards the water-driven elements -the flour mill, blacksmith’s workshop, fulling mill and veneer sawmill. Road vehicle fans won’t be disappointed either. They can admire the oldest surviving car from Slovenia or enjoy the sight of the limousines that once belonged to President Tito, Premier of former Yugoslavia. Apart from the guided tour in Slovene, English, Italian and German languages through the museum collections, visitors can also attend several workshops and demonstrations, through which they can truly experience the technical spirit of the past. With prior arrangement, we can organize workshops and demonstrations for groups outside of our schedule. In addition to the permanent collection, you can also visit some temporary exhibitions. Museum’s opening hours:Tuesday - Friday: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. (July and August: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.) Saturdays: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.Sundays and holidays: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.Mondays: closed. From 4th December until 1 March the museum is closed for visitors (except for groups announced in advance) due to unheated rooms.
Duration: 1-2 hours

Hello It's actually a nice museum with lots of interesting exhibits. We wanted to look at the museum. It was actually open until 5 p.m. But from 4 p.m. all the doors were locked, so the tour ended at 4 p.m., I didn't think that was right for the price. Best regards, Achim

The main attraction here is a collection of limousines that once belonged to Yugoslavia's leader Josip Broz Tito. After you buy your ticket, you'll see one room of historical cars from Slovenia, including the Yugo-era Zastava. Unless you are really into woodworking or hunting, I'd recommend you move quickly through the old monastery rooms full of tools and stuffed animals to get to the transportation section. Tito's cars, ranging from a Rolls Royce to Soviet ZIS armored limos and American-made Cadillacs, are a real slice of history. Other vehicles on display include TAM military trucks and a cute streetcar that once operated in the streets of Ljubljana. Most of the exhibits have signage in both Slovene and English.
The setting in a former monastery between the towns of Vhrnika and Borovnica is quite beautiful, with a stream that once powered waterwheels. The main road runs right through a monastery building. There is a small cafe that wasn't open at the time of our visit due to Covid. Masks were required, but social distancing was easy since we appeared to be the only visitors on an April Wednesday.
The only complaint is the lack of public transport options to the museum -- we ended up walking about 8 kilometers from Vhrnika because we couldn't find the local bus connection, and it runs very infrequently. The helpful workers at the museum helped us connect with the return bus, which fortunately stopped when we flagged it down. Otherwise, you really need a car to get here.

Former monastery shelters technical heritage from farming tools to Marechal Tito's cars. There are collections explaining printing, electricity, hunting and fishing ...The venue is popular for weddings and birthday parties. It's location at the edge of Barje (Ljubljana marshes) alone is a goal for bicycle tour from Ljubljana or nearer Vrhnika. It is a venue for all generations and worth following special exhibitions or lectures if you like technic.

What an amazing walk through the history of technological advancement.
Did you know that the oldest wheel ever was found right in this reagin? Over 5000 years old wheel.
But one the exciting things to see is the cars that President Tito used to drive or shall I say was driven in. The museum is situated in an old castle Kartuzian monastery. Really nice place to visit on any day. We were there on actually hot day and it was perfect to stay inside.
Very close to Ljubljana. And while you are there go to Iški Vintgar too

This was our favorite museum in Slovenia (not site, museum).
You can enjoy this museum on so many levels: historic, scientific, natural, artistic...
Everything to do with Slovenian life over the centuries is present: how they lived, what they wore, what they drove, the tools they worked with, art, it's all here.
We arrived at 10am and didn't leave until 2pm, hungry, tired but extremely satisfied and enriched.
The museum is in the Bistra castle and occasionally you get glimpses of the old castle splendor.

A real bonus was the local museum (opens at 8.0 am!) which was just across the courtyard form our hotel. We were told that we really must visit it and that we would enjoy it. Neither of us are into museums, but we went anyway. What a gem! A real MUST. Three euros for two lovely hours of nostalgia. Model T cars, prob about 20 vintage cars, motor bikes, natural history displays, Old fashioned printing/sewing/ harvesting machine, but nothing dull at all - a great place for children . . very hands on.

It's placed in old monastry. Enviroment and expo itself are unic. Only problem is you must have your own transport. Ask at turist info in Ljubljana for the way. It's nice trip and excellent way to see something special. It offers look into forgoten way of living. Worth to risk half of day for.

Well, I was there twice, never finished the whole visit. But managed to see it all on those two trips.
I was recently also in the natural museum in Ljubljana, where they ALSO have stuffed animals on show. My guess is the best goes to the Natural museum in Ljubljana, everything else, so it is not thrown away, goes to the technical.
Actually I would not recommend it at all if it would not be such a huge place and therefore you probably will find at least 1/6 of it very interesting depending on your preferences.
The most interesting part is probably the cars an the real technical stuff from the history of medical instruments, printing and typewriting.
Everything else is just pure crafts. Making bread, making wood, cutting wood, badly stuffed animals, fishing, etc..
And a huge selection of bicycles. Which is unbearable to watch on a hot day, since it is located in a roof of a building that is not insulated and therefore has a temperature of probably 40°C.
So if you go visit and don't have enough time, you can very easily skip the natural and woodwork making area, if of course this is not your preference.
Some rooms of the museum actually looks like depo places. Nothing there except 10 washing machines from the same make, that is not even Slovenian (and Slovenia has it's own washing machine maker that is in not represented here in the museum...sorry, that is strange.)
So if you are interested in crafts, visit. Otherwise, why not, visit, just don't be upset to not actually see a lot of technical stuff.
And be careful, calculate at least 4 hours for the visit, 30 minutes from Ljubljana to the museum, and take a good look till when they have the museum open at the particular day, since they close very soon and also on different timetables each day.
You can also have lunch there, there is a restaurant next to the museum.
The woodwork and badly stuffed animals areas are prohibited to photograph. Otherwise you can take photos.

We've spent a rainy few hours there. It's full of texidermy, cars, motorobikes and motorcycles, plus quite a bit more, from tapistry to info on textilles. Nice thing to see, don't miss Tito's cars, which in my opinion, are worth the 4,5€ entrance fee. The surroundings are absolutly romantic and perfect.
It is obvious that the museum is lacking funds which could make it a must see, but it is still definitly worth seeing.
Be aware though: It's packed on Saturdays as it's a popular wedding venue!!
