Description:

The Teatr Wielki - Polish National Opera is Poland's leading opera, ballet...

The Teatr Wielki - Polish National Opera is Poland's leading opera, ballet and concert venue, where rich tradition and a clear vision for the future meet. Offering each season a host of first-rate productions - many developed in co-production with international partners - the opera house contributes significantly to the richness of Poland's cultural life. The Teatr Wielki's building, erected in the first half of the 19th century according to a design by Italian architect Antonio Corazzi, was a haven for Polish culture and heritage at a time when the country was under foreign occupation from 1772 to 1918. After a short spell of Poland's independence, the Teatr Wielki was turned into rubble as Warsaw succumbed to German forces at the onset of World War II. Rebuilt from ruins, the opera house reopened just over 50 years ago, in 1965, and is currently home to the Polish National Opera, Polish National Ballet, and Opera Gallery. It is a place where the universal idea of synthesis of the arts has been consistently put in action, providing audiences with superb works by leading contemporary artists to see and savour. Being a thoroughly modern institution, it draws from the synergy of various ideas, goals, and aspirations.

We saw the opera William Tell by Rossini on a Wednesday night. Although the theatre says it doesn't have a dress policy; please dress up (no jeans or trainers) if you visit as you will feel left out if you do not. The theatre itself is very large and has a delicately decorated interior; arrive a little early to have... More

What a massive Theatre/Opera. It's an old theatre with one of the biggest stages in Europe. Beautiful Operas, Ballets and also another theatre - National Theatre in the building. Must see. Close to the Old Town. Beautiful!

We went to the ballet which was very well done. The building itself is beautiful. Seats were spacious and comfortable. During intermission we checked out the opera costumes that were on display. Wow! I really enjoyed seeing the extremely ornate costumes! I highly recommend checking out the exhibit. There is plenty of time during intermission. You can't get away from... More

With the largest stage in Europe this Opera House is well worth a visit whether to watch a ballet or opera. The building is grand, beautiful and impressive, impossible to imagine that is was completely rebuild after WWII. On the first floor there is usually an exhibition. When we visited it was of costumes worn in various operas. We have... More

We visited the opera house to see the opera Oniegin by Tjajkovskyj. The scenography was beautiful and the whole experience was great for both eyes and ears. The building is beautiful and learning its history and how it was rebuilt after WWII makes it even better. There are also different exibitions. During our visit they also had exibition of costumes... The Teatr Wielki (Grand Theatre) itself is a very impressive building on the edge of Warsaw's old town which really adds to the atmosphere. As Warsaw residents we've been quite a few times and have enjoyed almost all the performances we have seen, the most recent being Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet.

Even though this opera house might not be in the top 10 leading opera companies in the world, it is worth visiting because of its location (in the old town area), a nice square in its front, but predominantly because it's one of the biggest (by dimensions) opera houses in the world! If you ever visited Palais Garnier or La... More

This could have been (and it actually aspires to being) one of the most interesting opera stages in this part of Europe but thanks to its management it's becoming more and more provincial with every season. What kind of performance would you associate an opera house with? If you answered "opera", you might be surprised, since there are months where... More

Incredible performance in this ballet, based on the Brothers Karamazov with music from Rachmaninoff and Wagner. Sets and dancers were superb
