As an instrument of torture and punishment for miscreants and associated with the stocks that were nearby. As punishment the offender would have to sit on the back and heavy weights were applied to them. I'm sure it made a lasting impression! Now it's a cute brass figure for tourist's amusement.

When in Torun you have to see all the bronze statues. If you walk by all of them, you also walked a nice piece of the city.

The monument of the Torun donkey was unveiled in 2007 and it stands in the same place, where until the end of the 18th century there was a pillory of a similar form.
In the past, the pillory was a way of punishing residents for various offenses- on a wooden donkey, on whose back there was a sheet with a protruding edge, mostly undisciplined soldiers were planted. To their legs weights were tied, making the punishment more cruel.

It is located almost opposite to the monument of Nicolas Copernicus but there's no sign of him due to the regular crowd around. Sorry Nicolas.

The donkey statue was easy to locate on a street corner opposite the Copernicus statue (in front of the Town Hall) and 1 block away from the main church, Cathedral of St. Johns. This bronze donkey certainly was popular with groups of school children in June who stopped to give it a stroke while their teacher explained its purpose. The donkey looks harmless until you look at its back to see a raised ridge running from its neck to its tail and then you realize its purpose is not for fun.
Indeed, in the 1600's a donkey that stood on this corner was used as a pillory to punish wrong doers, perhaps to discipline unruly soldiers. Once seated, weights would be attached to the victim's legs to increase the pain along the victim's bottom. Passersby would also humiliate the person sitting on the donkey. On the building beside this monument was a small information board in Polish/English/German that explained this unique pillory. A commemoration for a most unconventional way of punishing wrongdoers.

This statue used to be made of wood and is a testament to one of the most interesting forms of punishment I’ve ever heard of! If you were a bit of a wrong ‘un you had to sit on the donkey for a day. “That’s nothing” you may think, but hang on, it had razor blades strapped the length of its back.
After a couple too many Kozels (the local beer) I was prompted by my fella to get on the donkey for a photo. I scrambled up it, painfully, sat there grimacing for the picture only to realise the bloody battery in the camera was flat! So, no photo but BRUISES like you’ve never seen!!

I have visited Torun many times and my favourite monument or statue is a life sized donkey located just off the town square, opposite Copernicus. The popularity of the donkey can be clearly shown by how polished its nose and ears are from tourists constantly rubbing and stroking him! Be very wary of trying to ride him however, as he has a solid metal bar, running down his back and most of my friends have suffered bruising on legs and buttocks from their drunken antics!!

We saw two different animal statues in Torun, this one and the dog. You can't miss it as it's quite a large statue in the city centre. Takes under a minute to see it.
