The Jagiellonian University is without a shadow of a doubt one of the oldest universities in the world and comprises of 15 faculties, each building is beautiful in their own way with lovely courtyards and well kept grounds, very popular places to visit.
Collegium Novum ( New Colleges ) is one such building ,it's the main building of the Jagiellonian University, built between 1873 _ 1887 in the Neo Gothic architectural style so pleasing on the eye designed by Feliks Księžarski to match the architectural style of the Collegium Maius.
My twin brother Stephen and I are currently enjoying a great eight day stay in Krakow, were not to far from the Jagiellonian University and it's lovely walking the grounds and just taking in the great architecture of the Jagiellonian University and embracing the delights of Planty Park.
Well worth checking out .

There are so many beautiful buildings in Krakow, one that I love to view is Collegium Novum .
A wonderful looking building, one of 15 faculty buildings that make up the world famous Jagiellonian University, constructed between 1873-1887 and built from designs from architect Feliks Ksiezarski, its such a beautiful building, a great example of Neo Gothic architecture at its best, its most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area and easy to locate along Golebia.

This is the newer building of the university so for a place with so much history - the older building are obviously much better

This building is where 183 faculty members were invited to a "dinner party" by the nazi's and then arrested and murdered. More info and pics at etbtravelphotography blog

This is a decent university building.
While the building's façade is quite lovely, the interior is rather bland and uninteresting.
Don't miss the lovely statue of Copernicus near the building.

Our oldest Polish university was established in 1364 by king Kazimierz the Great as a studium generale. At the beginning there were not many students so not many buildings were needed.
But it has changed over centuries. Now lectures are led in many different buildings and administrative issues are in separate building – in Collegium Novum.
It is not a very old building – over 150 years old. It was built for the 500th anniversary of establishing university so it was created in a way to match other, older buildings of university (nearby Collegium Maius). Collegium Novum at the front wall has symbols of a king who established studium generale, symbols of kings who gave money for re-establishing it few years later and a symbol of pope, who was involved because his consent was essential in XIV to create such an important school.
Inside it looks like an elf palace for me – everything is white and because of neogothic style – seems light, not heavy as walls. There are some fully decorated assembly halls (called aula). Above every portal (door) made of white stone there are engraved names of departments with numbers. On the right side of doors there are also paper labels with different names of departments with different numbers. Names above doors were engraved 150 years ago. Since that time university has grown bigger and bigger so it is obvious that names dated XIX century doesn’t match nowadays needs. So those numbers don't correspond to each other.
At the II or III floor there is a room with golden board to commemorate that inside this room professors were gathered by Nazi soldiers, arrested (for being professors) and sent to a Nazi concentration camp. It was on 6 November 1939. Germans wanted to kill Polish intellectual elites. It is room number 56 – on paper on the right side of the portal. “LXVI” (66) is engraved above. Professors were told that an important meeting was going to held in this room so most of them - from different high schools- came and entered the room. They could not go out.
In 1939 Polish people knew that the II World War would burst out so Polish professors wanted to hide some Polish works of arts. Some pieces of gothic Altar of St. Mary by Veit Stoss (XV) from the main church were hidden in one of rooms of Collegium Novum in double safe. Professors created a safe place under the safe place and inside the deepest one Altar was hidden. It was room number 18 I think, but I am not sure if "18" means number at a paper label or "18 (XVIII)" engraved over the door.
Inside it is so majestic, bright like a temple or a forest with high trees. But it is less decorated than a church of course. I recommend visiting it during working hours (8am-4p.m.; Monday-Friday). It would be close otherwise.

One of the many attractions within Planty Park.
Stunning facade, beautiful statuary, oh to be a student here!
The place just oozes history.
