I am Catholic, so I know how to behave in a Catholic church. I'm also an artist, so I paint and make stained glass all the time. I'm appreciative of other artists.
I was looking at the amber, standing still and not doing anything. He came up to me and said 'show some respect'. I was doing nothing disrespectful.
When he was speaking to me he said 'you don't understand' around 5 times and sniggering. I understood everything almost perfectly. He pointed out the tabernacle. I clearly understood what that is, being Catholic.
He said you don't pay to see the alter. This is where the priest stands. But the barrier was removed. He was standing there himself and everyone who visits the amber gets up close.
I would have preferred if he said hello, or a welcome. Rather than saying 'show some respect'.
He told me to move out of the way, and put a couple of visitors in the place I was at, saying 'you can stand here because you are special'.
He pointed out something very small in the alter that I couldn't see. I had my glasses in my hand and said I might see better once I put these on.
As a disabled person I also had to pay the full amount on the entrance.
I don't think I've ever felt so unwelcome, or been so patronized, in any church.
Had he not left me feeling unwelcome, been rude, patronizing, laughed at me, I would have donated some money and bought some things from the shop.
Not really a way to treat a tourist who's trying to enjoy a visit.

Really beautiful church. The most beautiful and expensive amber decoration is seen behind the altar. In the basement you can see a somewhat macabre decoration in the form of skulls from nuns who have worked in the church.

Visited this church during our visit to Gdansk. We were very impressed with the beauty of this church. The altar which has extensive amber content is spectacular. The church played an important role in the Solidarity movement which can viewed in documentation during your visit.

Not the biggest or highest like the St. Mary Basilica in the old town, St. Brigitte was the most beautiful Church we saw over 5 days in northern Poland.
Church was built in the middle of 14c as a small Chapel dedicated to St. Mary. Some 20y after, a funeral procession of late St. Brigitte was passing through Gdansk from Rome to her resting place in Sweden. People of Gdansk paid their respects and accommodated the procession for some time. After that the Church was enlarged, a monastery added and renamed to St. Brigitte.
The Church interior is rich and nicely decorated, contrary to other Polish Churches which are mainly whitewashed due to WWII devastations and lootings.
On the right hand side there're several chapels, but two of them drew my attention:
- first, one dedicated to infamous Katyn massacre in 1940, when Soviets killed more than 20.000 people when they occupied eastern Poland and
- second, dedicated to Solidarnost movement and their victims to Communist oppression.
In the crypt is an ossuary.
But, the main star is a newly added, in 2000 - huge and magnificent Amber altar.
It's the biggest piece of amber art, with Our Lady protecting the working people in the center, dedicated to Dec 1970 shipyard uprising victims. Around are other saints, leaves and decorations, all made in different shades and colors - truly amazing.
I am shocked this Church is on TA page 2 ???

I have never ween such a wonderful work of art as the amber altarpiece. It seems alive and golden with fire. The church is fascia ting in the recent history of Polish independence.

Worth seeing especially for the fabulous Amber Altar. It was the church very associated with Solidarity.

This is a very interesting building which is associated with the whole solidarity movement.Thecaltar is made completely of amber and is absolutely beautiful.

This church mad a mark in world's history. This is where Solidarity movement took its roots. The amber alter is a must see. Couple blocks a way is Polish Post Office, another significant place where World War II started and the Polish postal workers defended the building for 12 hours against all odds. There is small entry fee to see the church.

I would not have visited this church if not for two locals telling us about it. One was Alexandra, a private guide, and Alex who took us for a vodka tasting tour. I am so pleased they did as the amber alter is unlike any alter I have seen, and I visit churches everywhere. It is beautiful to say the least and I don't even like amber that much. There is so much detail in the amber alter and the colour is glorious. I would rate this church as my No 1 in Gdansk.

The amber altar piece is simple amazing. The church is fairly simple aside from that but is well worth a look when you're wandering around the city on foot!

Hello.
No, You can visit this church for free. Sometimes there are sponsored exhibitions (when You must pay for sightseeing), but it happens very rarely. Come and see. Greetings from Gdańsk, Piotr :-)
