This plaque acts as a memorial to the non-violent student uprising of 1989 that led to the downfall of Communism in what was then known as Czechoslovakia. The outstretched hands, their fingers splayed in a “V” for victory, represent the students who faced off against riot police, sparking a series of protests against the government.
The students were commemorating the 50th anniversary of when the Nazis stormed Prague in 1939. On that occasion, students were attacked by police as well.
Today, people honor the students & their fellow dissidents by leaving candles, wreaths & ribbons at the memorial.

This memorial is a very clever sculpture to commemorate the Velvet Revolution of 1989 and return Czechoslovakia to democracy. It features a sculpture of many hands, some raised in celebration and others raised in V for victory.
Worth seeing if in the area just to remember that great day. There's also a small exhibit in the building, but I wouldn't bother as there's not much information in English.

Lovely to see this memorial in a busy part of town identifying where the quiet revolution began. In these times it is good to see that change can happen. Less than a month when the conditions were right. Of course much happened prior and after that allowed this evolution of peoples power to occur.

The location of this plaque is associated with a building that is currently (April 2016) undergoing reconstruction so is not accessible to the public. You can walk by the building so you know the location, but you can't actually see the plaque.

I sought out this memorial after a visit to the Museum of Communism renewed my interest in the Soviet era. Sobering memorial; worthwhile for all of us to remember, especially in view of recent events.

Just days after the infamous fall of the Berlin Wall, students in Prague staged a peaceful protest against the communist regime. They were attacked brutally by the riot police.
It marked the start of the fall of communism in Czechoslovakia.
The small bronze plague that memorializes this significant event is located under a portico on Narodni Trida.
Small memorial for a very significant event ...
