Superb Baroque Church

One of the finest churches I have ever visited with extremely elaborate internal carvings paintings and religious artefacts close to Charles Bridge. Costs 70 czech crowns to enter.

Impressive and rich in size, materials, decoration and artwork, a church second only to St. Vitus on our visit.

The exterior of the St. Nicholas Cathedral does not do justice to its stunning interior. When we visited, it was not as busy which gave us the opportunity to appreciate everything better. The interior of the church is so beautiful and its details are very impressive. We loved being able to climb up into the balcony and read about some... More

The exterior of this building gives no clue to the stunning interior! There is so much to see in this beautiful church that it is impossible to describe, other than totally overwhelming. Well worth a visit.

Photos don't do justice to this stunningly impressive building. The interior decoration with the massive marble statues are jaw dropping and perhaps because we were virtually alone (apart from the guards/security) I think we were able to appreciate it better (compared to the noise and mass tourists we had experienced in St Vitus Cathedral on the hill. As mentioned previously... More

I have been inside of Notre Dame, the Basillica in Paris, St. Vintus, Galway Cathedral, St. Stephen's in Vienna, and the National Cathedral in DC. But, out of all of these, St. Nicholas is my favorite. I can't really put a finger on why (I am, by no means knowledgeable about architecture or art) but I loved it.

There is more than one St Nicholas Church but this one is in the lesser town (Mala Strana) across Charles bridge from old town. You can enter for a minimal admission through most of the day and tour through most of the building. The tower is accessible for a further fee and there are regular concerts later in the day... Between the Castle and the Charles Bridge...take the time to stop for a visit. I don't think you'll be disappointed. It has been described as "the most impressive example of Prague Baroque". Thankfully it was extensively renovated in the 1950s which reversed the damage caused by 200 years of leaky cladding and condensation. It would have been tragic to have... More

Described as "the most impressive example of Prague Baroque" and once you're inside you'll agree too. Honestly, this wasn't on my check-list but came across the church on my way to Prague Castle and decided to check it out; glad I did because the interior is mind-blowing!

The inside part of it is even more beautiful than the outside, Definitely worths the visit, and, of course, some pictures of it. Easily reachable, since it's downtown, near many other touristic attractions.

Staying in Mala Strana (Little Quarter)

Neighbourhood Profile
Mala Strana (Little Quarter)
Malá Strana is one of the oldest and the most beautiful neighbourhoods in the city. Nestled underneath Prague Castle it was once a part of the Kings route taken by future kings on their way to coronation - originating in the Old Town, crossing Charles Bridge and leading to Saint Vitus Cathedral. Cobblestone streets are lined with picturesque medieval houses, remarkable palaces, churches, kitsch shops and restaurants. Do not hesitate to turn a corner into any narrow street. You will suddenly find yourself in a calm and charming neighbourhood full of hidden gardens, parks with peacocks, fruit trees and ponds. As the neighbourhood is a home to Czech Parliament and many ministries, you can also run into well-dressed officials. If you are thirsty or hungry, it is the right place to be. Restaurants offer delicious traditional food and of course, the best Czech beers.
