The Old Town Hall is one of the most significant monuments in the Czech Republic. It was established in 1338 as the administrative seat for Prague's Old Town. Now, it is mainly used for the ceremonial purposes of the capital city, Prague. The historical town hall consists of a set of five medieval houses, the corner of which is adorned with a historical astronomical clock, a gothic oriel window and a massive rectangular tower. The lookout gallery on the town hall tower offers the most beautiful view of Prague. A tour of the historical halls in the Old Town Hall is a unique experience. The expensively decorated rooms date from various periods and are examples of the remarkable development of the town hall complex. The guided tours in various languages are organised in half-hourly intervals.

We were incredibly fortunate to arrive in front of the Astronomical Clock about three minutes before the hour. I knew nothing about the clock when we arrived in Old Town Square and wondered why large crowds of people were staring upward. So of course I stared upward as well, to see what all the fuss was about. Nothing happened, and... More

It s marvellous, but all those kiosks that fill the square...you cannot see the real nature of it. So i guess it s better to visit it not around xmas and not during the day.

Wait for the turn of the hour, find a good spot to observe and (if you like) photograph or video, and enjoy the centuries-old clockwork figures as they announce the changing of the times.

Big astronomical clock. Very busy but is a must see. The area around the clock can be quite crowded at times but I would come here again.

Lovely square which was filled with Christmas stalls! And lovely buildings surrounding, the clock tower was beautiful, and you must see at the hour to see the clock! A must see if visiting Prague.

This is a highlight of the city. The clock is amazing and well worth visiting (even if you go when it is not chiming). The clock was built so long ago and is so intricate with so much to look and wonder at that you can be there for ages just trying to work it out.

On our second day we joined the crowds and watched as the clock struck 5 and saw the parade of the apostles, on our third day we decided to walk up the tower (160CZK) Well worth the money if you can do the stairs...fantastic views of the river and castle)

Staying in Stare Mesto (Old Town)

Neighbourhood Profile
Stare Mesto (Old Town)
One of the oldest neighbourhoods in town represents the medieval heart of Prague. It’s no surprise it is bustling with tourists every time of day. Križovnický square, overlooking Charles Bridge with Prague Castle in the background, is probably the most beautiful square in the city. Its unique historical atmosphere of gothic houses and churches, cobblestone streets and squares, and stone towers blend together with the modern era. A vast array of bars, restaurants, dance clubs, international brand shops, galleries and hotels bring life to the old city. With its charming and picturesque cobblestone streets, the nightlife and parties will surely be unforgettable.
