We did an overnight trip to Gauja National Park. It is very scenic and full of interesting castles and manors. The restaurants throughout the area are also very good. We did a couple of hikes and enjoyed them. Highlights of the area were seeing the Cesis Castle; staying overnight at a bed and breakfast; and the Gauja Valley with the Sigulda, Turaidas and Krimuldas castles. We were able to find plenty of free parking and prices for attractions in the area were very affordable.

Very nice place to visit during autumn. I was with a local colleague who showed me some places to hike. Most of the path has boarded walks or is in good conditions but after rain there can be also slippery muddy bits so I recommend good shoes. People say Latvia is flat, however Sigulda area can have many hills so there were multiple wooden staircases on our way. Be prepared and have water with you. Nice viewing points.

If you are coming from the United States, the national parks in Latvia are a little different from ours in that there is a fair amount of private development and businesses within the park’s boundaries. Please also note that during our visit parts of the roads were under very heavy construction, particularly towards the center of the park.

We spent most of our time at the Turaida Museum Reserve. There is parking across the street. If you are looking for a meal or snack break, there is a nicer café inside the ugly Soviet-era building right by the parking lot. It isn’t obvious, but you pay for the parking at the park entrance and it was something like 1.50€.

The park includes well-marked walking trails and a fair amount of sculpture. There are some buildings with historical displays. The primary attraction is the attractive red-brick castle. You can go to the top of the large round tower. The neighboring buildings also have historical displays. It’s just fun to walk around.

Come here on a nice day and just enjoy it.

Piece and Tranquillity. Gauja is beautiful!
Recommended to go during the week days ( less people) We went on Monday. Left car in Sigulda Pludmale ( Camping Site on the beach near the bridge & Tartzan fun park)./ Had a ride to Ligatne and started our trip down the river back to Sigulda ( trip 6hrs, but there is a choice of shorter distances)
You don't need to row much, as the river had strong current and takes you with it.
Stopped for a swim on the beautiful sandy beaches.
Child still had energy to go on the rides at Tarzan.
Don't forget suncream and a hat :)
P.S. This trip can be done for free if you have your own boat/ kayak and a lift .

It was really a fantastic surprise. I choose that destination because of castles of Cesis and Sigulda. But when i start to visit the park, i could see that it's one of the most beautiful places of Latvia.

The are different trails, more hard and more easy. It's really a calm place, not so much turist when i was there, so it was more easy to enjoy.

Ideal also for families because besides the trails into nature, there also many spaces for kids.

Few info points and parkings, so it's easy to move there. Parkings cost is less than 5 euros for day. Normally price is included in some ticket for some castle or museum you visit.

i visited here on a day-trip from Riga. It's 2.80 by bus and about 90 minute journey. The main highlights are Turaida castle, the hiking trails and I particularly recommend Paradise Hill.

In my opinion, Gauja National Park is the most beautiful part of Latvia. But they also recognized this and it is more on the expensive side.

We visited the sandy cliffs of Sietiņiezis in the Gauja National Park, about an hour hike. From the top to bottom and up again. There are wood stairs, well constructed. It's a pleasant hike, with beautiful scenery.

We walked through the refreshing greenery surrounding Sigulda area leisurely. The Tourist Centre at the Railway station provide all the requisite information about hiking, cycling and other activities in the Park. This National Park set up in 1973 covering area of 91,745 hectare is first Park in Latvia. With rich and varied biodiversity, unique flora and fauna dotted with cultural and historical monument is a must visit in Eastern Latvia and also best example of Vidzeme region.
