An awesome old village with caves in the rocks, some ruined buildings, an ancient church, and wellspring. Take some time for a walk and enjoy in lovely nature.

It’s amazing that people used to live here till quite recent. The dwelling shows their tools which show their self sufficient lives. There are several churches showing that people here were religious, too. I was told by our guide that people voluntarily left here due to food getting less and condition, not by Soviet Union order.
You reach here by going down the long steps and long suspension bridge. Very exciting! There’s a short taxi service which makes you avoid going up all the stairs. It was a very old Soviet era car by old driver. Bumpy steep lane by old old car.. another experience!

A bit of hard road to reach, then steps down and over amazing suspension bridge, to reach even more amazing caves, homes of many people not so long ago... by guide's info, sadly they realocated dwellers to houses, as government said "we are not cavemen". But as they were still living there in recent history, would be even bigger attraction if people would still be there...

Honestly, there isn’t much to see here. But the walk across the swinging bridge, the stroll through the woods to the church, and the exercise of climbing the 429 steps back to the top make it worth a visit. To think that people lived in these caves up until only 60 years ago is a little mind blowing. It’s in ruins now but not a bad way to spend a couple of hours on a summer afternoon, exploring the countryside.

There is a long stairway to get to the gorge between the mountains, you can pass to the other side by the "swinging bridge", that has the best nature view.

Descend 400 steps and then cross the swinging bridge over the gorge to the former cave town. Ruins of cave settlements, a natural spring and the church are the highlights. Take water, because the climb back up those stairs Isn’t fun!

Located near Goris, Old Khndzoresk is an early village largely constructed out of soft rock and known for its role in the liberation movement of David Bek in the 18th century. Old Khndzoresk is situated in the beautiful, lush canyon below the more modern New Khndzoresk village. Many of the ruins, rock formations, and caves that compromise this city have been hewn by the people of the region over the course of centuries, hosting inhabitant as late as the 1970s.

We spent the whole afternoon in the area. If you are lucky you will meet the village people who come here quite often to enjoy the serenity of the place and take care of the sheep. They are very hospitable and willing to share their stories as well as show you where they grew up as kids. The children are now university graduates! Better to spend afternoon since the light is soft and the colors are amazing. make sure you visit the old church (17th century). It looks deserted but is still in use from time to time.

People lived here for centuries. In the early 20th century, the Soviet authorities ordered people out, so the new village was built, leaving the old settlement caves as a perfect example of the past. A hanging bridge takes you to the caves. Check the old church too.

Like old Goris, the people of Khndzoresk lived until the 1950´s in natural and man-made caves. Some of the caves are still in use, at least the ones that are easily accessible as stable and storage places. There were just a few structures not made in the rock, such as the church, which one can visit. To get there one has to cross the "swinging bridge" across the gorge, so not ideal for people with fears of height. But well worth it! The gorge landscape is spectacular, and parts of the time the landscape looks a little bit like a small Cappadocië.
