About
Founded by the local nobility at the end of the 16th century, the Real Maestranza maintains a horse-riding school and is also the builder of an impressive bullring, in the centre of the romantic town of Ronda, near Malaga and the Costa del Sol. In modern times, the principal activities are devoted to the conservation of its unique historical and artistic heritage. It has gained a deserved reputation for the recovery of archives, works of art, libraries and original documents relating to its history. The bullring is open to the general public all year round and the visit includes the Bullfighting Museum, the Royal Harness Collection and the Antique Firearms Collection.

- laczkozsuDebrecen, Hungary1,618 contributionsTraditional Spanish placeWe took a one-day trip to Ronda and first saw this traditional place. It’s the oldest built arena from 1784. It’s a perfect circle, two-story auditorium with 5000 seats. The most impressive for me: 136 tuscan columns. It’s worth a visit.Visited December 2022Written 22 January 2023
- SillySquash121 contributionsAmazing experience for all the family! This place was so interesting. I loved learning about it’s history and seeing inside a bullring. This is a great place to go with kids and adults. This is an amazing place for kids to run around and tire themselves out. You also get a great view from the top row seats.Visited April 2023Written 6 April 2023
- aprilinparisGreater London, United Kingdom115 contributionsFantasticWe visited with our teenage children. We have been here before years ago and returned for second visit. It did not disappoint, the buildings are all immaculately kept, and the information inside is interesting and worthwhile. There are videos, costumes, paintings, armour, as well as the beautiful bull ring it’s self. There is a sand school with beautiful beamed ceilings and painted crests, and you can walk down inside the lowers areas, as well the Bull Ring, its self and the upper seating area. Well worth a visit.Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten 11 April 2023
- Jane T6 contributionsGreat visit OléHistory brought to life in this amazing bullring. I couldn’t buy tickets ahead of time but was assured they can always be bought on the day and they were. The audio guide was a great help as we were a large group so each could absorb as much or as little as they chose in their own time. The displays of posters, clothing and other historical artifacts around the bullring were fascinating. An all round must see in Ronda.Visited April 2023Written 8 May 2023
- quillboyLondon, United Kingdom105 contributionsExcellent visit!A must see for visitors to Ronda. A museum centred on the interesting history of bullfighting, the stars of the day and outfits worn. We had a very good audio guide and saw the riding school for young professionals and the stables although none were practising when we visited. The actual arena is a spectacular site.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 May 2023
- David SMiddlesbrough, United Kingdom1,712 contributionsINTERESTING DISTRACTION I SUPPOSEOpening in 1785, Ronda’s grand Bullring is now apparently used just once a year for the exclusive annual bullfight of the September Feria. In truth, there's not that much to see in the Bullring itself but the small museum and exhibition about the history of bullfighting is somewhat interesting despite whatever your feelings are about this contentious activity. All in all its a big part of the town’s history and culture and can't be ignored if you want to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of Ronda.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 July 2023
- Patrick vWeert, The Netherlands2 contributionsimpressive arenawe spent a few hours in this impressive arena. We learnt a lot about the typical Spanish art of bull fighting, although we would never want to witness a show ourselves . We absolutely recommend a visit to this place when you're in Ronda.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 July 2023
- USN_Seabee_WifeChehalis, Washington612 contributionsBull fighting history is quite interestingWhen you check in and pay your entrance fee you can choose to get an additional audio guide walk you through the entire facilities. The center of the bull ring is dirt so be prepared to get a little dusty. We were able to walk through where the bulls and horses are stabled. We were able to see a lot of informative information regarding the history of bullfighting, the entire that they wear, and the local area. It was very hot the afternoon that we visited so be prepared and bring plenty of water and a fan because the buildings have no air conditioning. Tip: Don't wear white shoes like I did and expect them to stay clean.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 September 2023

Nice museum with exhibit explanations in Spanish and English! Madonna filmed her “Take a Bow” video here! Make sure you look at the matadors chapel! Fascinating 😄Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 September 2023
- Jeff BSeattle, Washington1,007 contributionsAbout much more than bullfighting. Fun and informative. We two visited in Sep 2023. Optional audioguide very useful. This Museum is about much more than just bullfighting as it also traces the history of battling on horseback in Andalusia and the roots of equestrianism. One can walk in the bullring and stands, as well as on walkways over the bullpens.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 October 2023

Really interesting visit. I am not an advocate of bull fighting but it was very interesting learning all about the history of it and the building. The building itself if worth seeing from an architectural point of view if nothing else. Definitely worth doing.

In the heart of Ronda you will find this historical site - The Plaza de Toros de Ronda. Still an equestrian school, this was once the place where matadors came to fight the bulls in front of royalty and fellow Spaniards. You can almost feel the action when you step into the center of the bullring. A great museum also is part of the museum. Don’t skip it.

This was a truly interesting attraction to visit in Ronda. We went right at opening time to avoid crowds and it was great. The extra 1.50€ for the audio guide is definitely worth it.

This is a beautifully kept building with well manicured sand which is red in colour in some areas. I suspect this is not blood but the due to the red carpet that is used to level out the arena. Whilst the nature of the ring is probably not to be contemplated the museum shows some wonderful costumes and interesting old photographs. You can walk through yourself in about 30 minutes. There are guides but you will need to be prepared to listen to the gory details which may make many uncomfortable. The cost of entry is 8€. If you go to the roof garden of the Hotel Catalonia opposite you have a great view of the ring and can also have a drink for less than 8€ each

We are not in favour of bullfighting at all, but this had been recommended.
The bullring is a wonderful piece of architecture and you get to see “behind the scenes” which is interesting to see.
The history of bullfighting and learning it’s original intent (horsemanship rather than cruelty to animals) was an eye-opener.
They hold concerts, dressage, plays etc here now so you could also visit to see that too.

1-2 hours. I thoroughly enjoyed audio tour, it added so much, otherwise you are just aimlessly looking.

are there any bullfights in August I will be there around the 24th or 25th

No. The bullring in Ronda is the most important Plaza de Toros in Spain and is only used for bullfights one weekend per year, during the town's annual fiesta. The Goyesca Corrida(bullfight) is held on the Saturday (the penultimate day) if Ronda's fiesta. The fiesta takes place in the first week of September, normally. I think the Goyesca Saturday this year is on the 9th of September. The Goyesca attracts the world's best toreros.
On the Friday, a bullfight featuring young toreros (bullfighters) is held. These toreros are normally in their late teens, early 20's and are just a year or so shy of being qualified, having started training for the corrida at the age of 8 or 9.
When do the bullfights occur. What is the season?
