An Amazingly Scenic Stop

Looking through our photos, I realized that we had made another very scenic stop during our bus ride from Cuzco to Puno. This place, on the border between Cuzco and Puno is at the highest point in the Andes at an altitude of 14222 feet above sea level.

The place seemed like it was in the middle of nowhere, but all tour buses, and even the Peru Rail, make a stop here – just for the views of the two Mountain Ranges (the Andes and the La Raya) converging at this point. The Andes looked dark and foreboding in front of the snow-capped peaks behind.

It started snowing when we got off the bus, but luckily, we were still able to get a few good photos of the snow-capped peaks of the Chimpulla Mountain at 18000 feet, far back in the distance, and a bunch of Llamas running around in the fields below. On the road, there were signs on either side – one saying we are entering Puno, and the other side showing that they were entering Cuzco. The altitude is listed on each sign also.

Because everybody makes a stop here, there were a lot of vendors selling their wares – from cardigans, sweaters and shawls to small souvenirs of Peru. There were even Llamas to pose with.

A lovely spot, but a few people started getting headaches from the high altitude.

Beautiful snow-capped mountains

This is the border of Cusco and Puno with an altitude of 14 thousand feet. Our tour bus stopped over here to let us use the public restrooms here. Be prepared to have one sol ready in order to use the toilets. As expected, there are natives selling souvenirs here. If shopping is not your thing, you can enjoy the great view here with snow-capped mountains in the distance.

Visited this church as part of the Andean Explorer train trip from Puno to Cusco. Getting dark so hard to see much but the stark remoteness can not be under estimated. So pleased we stopped and hope it can carry on

Highest spot between Cuzco and Lake Titicaca

Perurail stops here. So do tourist buses. The view is good. There is a small but bustling craft market, ladies wanting you to take photos of them and their alpacas for a few sols, and an interesting church. For some reason, the church is dedicated to Our Lord of the Cane, but one thing you won't see here is sugarcane.

A shopping stop in the middle of nowhere

La Raya is a mountain range in the Andes (snow could be seen on the mountain peaks in the distance), located on the border of Puno and Cusco County in the middle of nowhere! and is the backdrop to a train stop where the Association of Artisans who congregate in this remote area with all their many wares so that passengers can make purchases. Set amid the incredible mountain scenery, it was something different. The clothing, alpaca woollen jumpers, cardigans, coats, scarves etc were well made and incredible value (US$20 for an alpaca wool jumper). Beware however, the altitude here is 4,319m and I did get a headache.

The highest point on the road from Puno to Cusco. Awesome scenery. And the obligatory tourist's wallet rubbing. The population of Peru deserves more than a pathetic sale of synthetic goods.

Grate stop on the way to Puno

This was a great stop on our way to Pune. Highest elevation I have ever been at. My wife loves to knit and she bought all sorts of alpaca yarn. So inexpensive as well. The view up here was amazing

We stopped here for a comfort break on our journey to Cusco. The views are amazing and the air is fresh and thin. Two mountain ranges converge here, The Andes and La Raya mountain range. The pass is at 5,489 metres above sea level and you can see the snow topped Chimpulla mountain in the distance, soaring 18,009 feet into the clear blue sky and one of the highest peaks in the range. Beautiful, majestic scenery!

Where two mountain ranges converge

Travelling by bus to Raqchi, we drove along the Andes mountains to the right and the Tectonic mountains on our left. The former had snow covered peaks, whereas the latter were a bit smaller but golden and rose colored. Beautiful, majestic and awe inspiring.

Cusela bus trip

On a very exciting bus trip from Cusco to Puno we stopped around 10 minutes at La Raya Pass(Alt. 4335 meters, 14,222 ft.) Max our guide on the bus, forewarned us that we would only stop for 10 minutes for fear that we may all get altitude sickness.The Mtns. .at the higher elevation were still covered with snow. Although I am not a shopper persay I did buy a small gift from one of the many merchants on the side of the road.( I would like to post photographs but are not given the possibility?)
