- Carrianne P6 contributionsSpecial place!Had an amazing time here! We tried to go when there was a high tide warning and it was just too rough to consider getting in with my husband and kids 6 and 8. Went back the next morning and the waves were calm enough and SO glad we tried again! Reef is just off shore, there’s an area a little left of the steps where it’s easy to get in. Wear water shoes and beware of the sea urchins along the rocks where you get in - it was so cool to see all of them but not fun to step on. There is an area where there wasn’t any which is where we opted to enter. The entire beach has rock formations along the shore so it’s not a good swimming beach or place where kids can play in waves. We had Amazon snorkel gear, nothing fancy, and went without flippers after reading reviews that it’s shallow enough to stand in some areas. Saw gorgeous fish, coral and even a sea turtle!! Very special place and I’m so happy we went! Parking is minimal so we went around 8-9ish on a weekday in April and there were only 2 cars. People park along the road and it’s a tight squeeze. I would back in to avoid having to do a 10 point turn to get out. We drove by the road at another time and it looked a mess with parking.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 12 April 2024
- Biz HLaurel, Mississippi32 contributionsWONDERFUL Beach, Bad ParkingWe had an AMAZING day at steps beach. We took some beach chairs from the house where we stayed, and brought our snorkle masks and had a wonderful time sitting under the trees and swimming around the reef. Travelers driving a car, BEWARE, though. We pulled over FAR on the side and parked on the dirt road that led to the beach (many other cars were also parked that way) and ended up with a $100 parking ticket. There were NO signs -- we certainly checked. Anyway, don't make the same mistake we did. Our host told us later that any car parked with wheels on the road at all can get a ticket (although it looks like folks parked that way all through the town).Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 April 2024
- TonyaTBonoJonesboro, Arkansas163 contributionsGood SnorkelingThe beaches in Puerto Rico are not my favorite but we had a great time here. The snorkeling was excellent. The water is calm and crystal clear. It is hard to enter and exit the water due to the coral. Parking is odd. The beach is small but there is a lot of shade and the water is beautiful.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 19 June 2024

We were going to be in the Rincon area - and we identified Steps Beach as a potentially good beach. We drove to Steps Beach which was at the end of a lane. Parking was a bit challenging - on the side of the road but the beach was lovely. Clean with plenty of sand and some vegetation as the back drop. We had a very nice swim in the cooling sea (on one photo we even had a local couple "photo bomb" us but then tell us after the photo - we had some good laughs and it pointed to me that the locals enjoyed this beach as much as us tourists.. There was a food truck at the entrance to the beach so we went back out for a fruit smoothie. A great beach visit without encroaching development.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 October 2024

When you first get out in the water, it is quite slippery because rocks border the beach. If small children are visiting, there should be adult supervision. Once you get out in the water, it is quite calm and fantastic for just relaxing. There is a beautiful coral reef a little bit out, so I would recommend snorkeling.

Our favorite little beach, close to Rincon. It's about a 2 min drive from the town area, but there is very limited parking. If you can get a place close to the beach, try to back in. It might be tough getting back out. We were there in the low season, so it wasn't too bad. But I understand it can get inaccessible. Most people park on the tiny road leading to the small parking lot; others park in the 6 or so spots off the main ride.
Either way, a short walk to the beach (maybe 20 yards), and our favorite place was a shady tree on the right. It's just this side of the "steps", which gives the beach its name. Take picture posing on the steps; everyone else does.
Snorkeling is great, and the reef was not slippery at all. The first time I visited, it was dusk, so I walked down the slightly sloping coral, and then surprisingly dropped off a 6' ledge. No harm done, but better to do it in daylight! Our visibly was poor to adequate, but I could see where it would be fantastic in clear conditions. Lots of big fish.
If you turn left when you walk to the beach from the parking lot, you'll pass some nice homes and hotels. More beautiful beach, corals, and diving. If you want to stay close to Rincon, this is the place.
But do venture out and head to beaches to the north in Isabella, and to the south in Cabo Rojo and Playa Ostiones. (We liked the northern beaches better. The south is very desert-like.)

Wonderful snorkeling right off the beach! My husband and I visited Steps Beach in June 2021 and enjoyed it so much we visited again on the last day of our trip. It was wonderful to walk right into the ocean and immediately see many colorful fish, as well as an octopus and a few mini squid! Highly recommend.

A lovely place to snorkel and beach walk. A bit difficult to get into the water (slippery) due to the rocky entrance but once you are in it is amazing. The reef is close to the steps but soooo many little fish to see even if yo don't go near the steps. Be careful if there are waves because the reef is shallow, we saw a lot of scratched swimmers. We saw reef squid and a massive school of about 100 blue tangs. Lots of shade for sitting and parking is easy, a short walk down if you park on the main road.

It's a cool experience to see the steps but they're pretty tiny and the beach had a bunch of seaweed too. Instead I would recommend the beach closest to the Rincon town square or Crashboat beach!

Insanely good reef snorkeling right from the beach - no boat needed! Rent fins and a mask at the Quick Lunch and spend the day just being entranced by the sea life. I followed a turtle for an hour, saw some huge schools of fish (the little blue guys will move in and start nibble-cleaning you if you float in one place long enough), and some color-changing octopus(es?). A perfect place for families and people looking for a chill day on the water.

This part of the beach is simple and has beautiful snorkeling areas as well as scuba diving. The beach has a bit of erosion due to Hurricane Maria, but you can still enjoy the beach and the water.

Will the area and it's amenities - rentals, food & drink be open 2018 Christmas Week? What is the approx. ocean temp during the winter?
Written 13 September 2018
Steps beach is not a developed tourist area. It is very natural and rustic. It is part of a coastal Marine Santuary. It is adjacent to Tres Palmas, another surf beach. The waves sometimes can get pretty big in the winter months. Water temp can be in the 80's in the winter - maybe 80-85. Chilly for some, like me who are from Florida and love heat. I was there in March-May 2018 and there were no amenities at Steps beach. The food truck that was always there was gone - probably a result of hurricane Maria.
There are small hotels and B&B's in the area, and larger hotels in town (Rincon) like the Villa Cofresi - which is about a 8 minute drive.
Check online for accomodation possibilities.
Steps beach is off Route 413 down a dirt road hill leading to the beach. If you plan to snorkel here to see the reef - be careful entering the water. - a lot of coral and rocks. As I sugested to others, enter the water on the left where there is more sand, and swim to the right to get to the reef. If the waves are too big, don't snorkel!

We'll be in Puerto Rico during Christmas Week this year. Is winter a good time for snorkeling at Steps?
Written 13 September 2018
No, unfortunately steps beach is treacherous in the winter, surfers come from all over the world to surf the huge waves at steps, so no swimming or snorkeling except in the summer.
Written 17 September 2018
Parking is very limited. A small parking lot exists at the entrance of the beach, but many visitors park along the lane that leads to it. Carpool if you have a large group! We typically take two cars, but not that day.

Much of PR was used for military training I think during WW II. If I remember correctly, this was one of the beaches they used as target practice. When training was done the destruction & machines were just abandoned. There is a beach where you can see tanks & missiles just sitting in the water/beach
