Plaza Mayor de Cuenca is the main square of the city, and it is located in a high point of the old town, in Castilla-la-Mancha Region. It is a curious square, because it has an irregular shape. In fact, it seems that a street gets wider and it is very nice. Here, you can see two of the most important buildings of the city: the town hall and the cathedral. Also, here you can find some bars/restaurants with a local atmosphere and it is a very good place to begin to walk around the old town.

Busy area. It serves as a bus and taxi stop, restaurants seatings and regular traffic goes in the middle of it. Let’s add the Cathedral and what appears to be the town hall.

After you have passed the “Plaza de Ronda” you continue and take the stairs on the end of the Plaza, and doing so you will automatically arrive at the “Plaza Mayor de Cuenca” from which you can say that it is an urban space full of charm. You will see colorful facades of several houses coexist with the baroque and elegant “Town Hall” of the 18th century, the work of Jaime Bort, built over three airy semicircular arches. Also noteworthy is the “Convento de las Petras”, with a beautiful church inside, dating between the 16th and 18th centuries. However, the main protagonist of this square is the “Cathedral of Cuenca”. Its curious neo-Gothic façade gives rise to a building that began to be built in the 12th century and was the first Gothic cathedral in Castile. From the late Romanesque to the abstract art of its stained glass windows, it is a sample of the beauty of the History. On the moment of our visit there was an exercise ongoing this for in case they had a fire in the Cathedral, like they had in Paris.

Although Cuenca’s Plaza Mayor is on the small side, it is an attractive square. It is dominated at the top end (it’s on a slope) by the impressive Cathedral, and an attractive row of coloured buildings lead down to an arched gateway at the bottom end. And that’s pretty much it; there’s not a lot to it, but what there is is rather nice.

From the high speed train station we took the bus to its final stop at this gorgeous Plaza. Coming through the archways that form part of the grand City Hall with its ornate foyer.

A standout landmark is the peerless Cathedral with its remarkable façade and interior. Not far is the impressive historic Convento de las Esclavas with balconied windows and somewhat fading stone grandeur.

Numerous eateries are dotted around and we alighted in some for tasty fare.

Little things attract your eye about this main plaza. It has a rather grand entrance at its low point. The Cathedral of course dominates the square. Roads veer off in every direction, including more uphills if so inclined. Restaurants and shops of course are present.

The city square here is smaller than most but still pretty and dominated by the 3 arched city hall and the huge cathedral.

This is the main square of the old town. The Cuenca Cathedral is here. There are many interesting, colourful and unique building on all sides of the square.

You can also find many restaurants close to the main entry gate.

Busy in a charming, peaceful kind of way with a medieval arch providing a gateway at one end. Not frenetic but enough going on to keep one entertained. Sufficient bars to provide a great choice and surprisingly realistically priced bearing in mind that they are in the cutural centre of an historic city. This is probably because most of the patrons seemed to be locals rather than tourists. Tapas presented with every drink, in some establishments we were offered a choice. Good way to pass the time. Even the local police provide entertainment in their attempts at traffic control. Worth spending a few enjoyable hours soaking upthe atmosphere. Also a great place to come for breakfast at one of the bars.

Do not miss the chance to walk UP the hill from new Cuenca to the plaza. You can reward yourself with lunch, dinner, or coffee, and watch the world go by. This is one of our all-time favorite spots to just relax and enjoy each other's company in a completely relaxed environment. You are steps away from history, hanging houses, beautiful museums, and amazing architecture.
