Häme Castle is one of Finland's medieval royal castles. It is believed to have been built at the end of the 13th century, following the crusade by Swedish Earl Birger to Häme region. During the Middle Ages the original fortified camp was built into a residential castle for its commandant. In the 18th century a third storey was built and curtain wall buildings partly replaced the original outer walls. The castle and its surroundings were in prison use from 1837 to 1972. The main castle is now presented as a historical monument. The Häme Castle and its redbrick barracks are on the shore of Lake Vanajavesi. The promontary has been a meeting place for centuries, and the walls almost echo the voices from the Middle Ages.

Very interesting location to visit if you are interested in historical castles/locations that have been there from 13th century, visit this one. Beautiful location, good guides. This castle has also been a prison.

Hämeen linna ("Häme Castle") is a medieval castle within walking distance of the centre of the city of Hämeenlinna. The neighbourhood between the castle and the city centre is very pretty and a good place for a short walk, even if you decide to skip the castle. The castle area consists of buildings from many ages, and the environment is... More

Absolutely Beautiful Castle. The location is easy and a bus goes from the train station aswell. But the walk is nicer. Guided tours recommended. Check the times advanced! They also have a Gift shop and some festivals and Special exhibitions. We only have few castles in Finland and this one is really beautiful with quite rare red bricks.

Interesting displays of old coins and other excavated items from nearby areas. The castle is restored and feels modern as it is now used for modern events. Still worth a short visit, especially if there is a guided tour. I went without a tour, which may be why I didn't enjoy the castle as much.

Häme Castle offered really nice surroundings for a wedding. As a bonus parts of the castle were open during the evening so that guests (especially kids) could wander around and have a real adventure.

Visited the castle during a national autumn vacation with children. Plenty of people, but no special seasonal program for visitors?! Even the cafeteria was closed! When do the Finns realize that there are families travelling also in Finland during this vacation period? The biggest problem was to find the place. From Tampere, entering Hämeenlinna we didn't find any boards or... More

Unfortunately the place has been a prison in the past and also many other events have affected to its authenticity. But still it is interesting experience to see a glimpse of Finnish history. They also had some special things for kids in some rooms, so if the walls are not enough, you can enjoy playing with Playmobils or trying to... More

First problem, the town needs some signs to make it easier to find this castle. Second problem, no coffee shop. Third problem, the castle is barren. Not a Baron's Castle, it is just mostly empty (unless you pay extra for the Heavy Metal exhibition). There is a lot of info on the reconstruction and plenty of empty rooms. For me,... More
