High on a hill in Kingscote this museum tells the story of Kangaroo Island from shipwrecked whalers to settlement, farming and life on an island. This is a National Trust property with a number of buildings with displays. Hope Cottage also has a rose garden of heritage roses including one cultivated from 1700's.

Hope Cottage is a very well maintained museum. Lots of interesting artefacts from the original settlers on the Island. Very helpful volunteers. Lots of books and a room to peruse them in about the Island and the early settlers. Really enjoyed my visit. Would like to go back.

What a find! We spent over 3 hours pottering around this 160 year old cottage and talking with the curator, who was a lovely chap with a wealth of knowledge and passion about the history. The cottage is fascinating with an enormous amount of displays. I thoroughly enjoyed looking at a Women's Weekly magazine from the 1930s (hands-on was great).... More

If you are a local history buff there is plenty here for you. Lots of books to look at and displays that show the history of the local community. We were looking for something that told us about the Aboriginal history of the island and were directed to a good book which was great. However, the lack of acknowledgement of... More

Definitely one of the finest rural museums in Australia. The blend of farming and sea culture displays add to the charm of this 160 years old cottage. The original Chance Brothers lens on the restored lighthouse is worth the visit alone.

On the way back to our cabin we followed the signs and popped in. Entrance fees are very affordable so it was worth a look. We were surprised at how good the museum is .. plenty of different artefacts, weapons, transport, machinery and a great insight into the historic town of Kingscote. We brought our kids (4 and 2) who... More

A great cottage maintained as it would have been lived in when built. There is much more on the grounds - from house/kero powered farming implements, through to old tractors, cars, a lighthouse (!), clothing, etc., etc.

They put a lot of effort into bringing a taste of yesteryear into this museum and it shows in the items on display

This museum gives you history of Kangeroo Island in the people and machines. They have a great collection of fully restored tractors and stationary engines
