About
Established by the Jesuits in 1851, Sevenhill Cellars is the oldest winery in South Australia's Clare Valley and the only Jesuit-owned winery in Australia. Originally established to produce altar wine, Sevenhill is now recognised for its premium table wines, which express the Clare Valley's distinctive varietal characteristics. The historic winery and cellar door, St Aloysius' Church, the College building, surrounding vineyards and spiritual sites give visitors an opportunity to combine appreciation of exceptional wines with an understanding of Sevenhill's religious and historic significance. You can discover this rich heritage by following our walking trail using a self-guided map, which are available at Cellar Door.

We recently tasted multiple wines including the 2020 St Ignatius Cabernet blend, 2021 Inigo Off Dry Field blend and the Two Shines' Fine Old Tawny, and confirmed - as we've been drinking Sevenhill's wines for many years - that Sevenhill continues to produce excellent quality wines that are great value. Highly recommended.

Sevenhill Cellars is an historical and very picturesque winery that could have been set in France or perhaps part of Spain. It is well worth the visit just for the ambience. But of course there we weren’t there for the architecture.

We took part in Campfire Conversations with Will (Winemaker) and Adele (Events Manager), set amongst a small pine tree grove above the winery. Adele is a very attentive host and made sure the event ran seamlessly. Will took us through their (his) premium range of wines and I learnt more about wine in those 2hrs than in the past half century or so. No pretensions, easy to follow answers to all of our questions. How unique to be able to see which block of vines a particular bottle came from. And what wines they are.

If you want a memorable experience and an upgrade on wine knowledge it is well worth it.

Great place to visit and the history of the vineyard is very interesting. The church and crust are impressive and loved the wine cellars below the main building.

We booked and paid $70 for the Fortified Wine and Chocolate Experience for 2 people at Sevenhill Cellars. It was supposed to last 40 mins.
We arrived 10 mins early and greeted by Rachel who advised that Tim would be hosting the Experience for us and he would be there soon. Suggested that we check out the underground Jesuit Cellars which we did.
When we went back upstairs Tim was at the bar and serving a family with their purchase. We stood at the end of the bar and waited. After serving the customer, he proceeded to clean up the bar, taking several loads of glasses into the back room. We were still waiting and he failed to acknowledge us even though we were the only couple there not drinking. Then a new group walked in and he began attending to them. After a good 10 mins past our booked time, I interrupted and asked. He told us to sit at a bar while he set up. He was completely disorganized and even said that it's been a while since he did one of these. He opened several boxes before he found the dark chocolate, had a milk chocolate actually stick to his glove, took his glove off and put the chocolate on the plate using his hands, claiming he had clean hands (even though we had noticed that he coughed many times while cleaning the bar)
After eventually setting up, his comment was that the chocolates had "jelly" in them and that Sevenhills was only the second place to make Port.
He then told us to "get stuck in!!"
So for our $70, we received 3 very small tastings of Verdelho, Topaque and Port, 3 liqueur chocolates and 3 Chocolate buttons. Absolutely no information to enhance the experience.
The whole "experience" took no more than 10mins as Tim walked off without further comment after telling us get "stuck in".

We tried to buy some dark chocolate but was told they had no stock. Also could not buy the Port we tasted as again, they had limited stock and used only for tastings.
This was certainly an "experience" - very poor and frustrating one. It would have been better to do the tastings which include the Fortified wines and you can buy the chocolate for $3 each at the Cellar. We did buy a bottle of the Topaque for $25. This "experience would be the worst winery experience I've ever had and I've been to many wineries and am a member of many Wine clubs. I gave them one star based on our self guided look at the Jesuit Cellars

Thank you for your feedback, the entire Sevenhill Cellars team are disappointed that this was your experience at our Cellar Door. We pride ourselves on our excellent customer service, attention to detail and offering experiences which provide insightful knowledge into the history, production and mission of Sevenhill Cellars, and this feedback clearly does not reach the standard in which we set for ourselves. I do appreciate the level of detail in your review so that I can follow this up with the staff member accordingly, and use this as a learning opportunity for all staff to improve in the future. We will be reviewing the experience also to ensure we are exceeding expectations for our customers. I do hope you will give us another chance on your next visit to the Clare Valley.

On a longer stay in the Clare Valley we ranked the cellar doors we visited mostly between 3 and 5 stars. Seven hills was amongst the top five star top ranked with highlights being an atmospheric old property (vines established by the Jesuits in 1849), simply the best cellar door staff, and of course, great wines. It is possibly the easiest accessible cellar door on the Clare reisling walking/cycling trail, and there is a fascinating walking track around this property which we highly recommend. If you can't visit all of the wineries in the Clare region, make sure you don't miss this one.

I stopped at this winery on the way back from Ikura National Park and it was a lovely way to break up a long drive. The wine tasting included some great tasting wines and it was fun to explore the grounds full of historic buildings. It was a unique experience to be able to go down into the underground cellar that was built at the winery's founding and also to see such a beautiful church. Overall, this was a really pleasant and relaxing winery to visit.

We paid a quick visit here while on a trip with some new friends (Adelaide locals) who were showing us around the Adeliade Hills. We had been told several times by our friends about the significance of Sevenhill Winery. When we arrived it was clearly evident that the winery isn't just a winery, but a special one with a church. We arrived late in the afternoon (20mins before closing time). However, the staff were great & let us view the cellars, which were amazing. We were even able to make a few purchases prior to leaving (even though we were most likley past closing time).

Great to hear about your friends sharing Sevenhill with you while you were visiting our wonderful state of SA! I am glad you had a look around downstairs as it is really special and even better to hear you were able to take some bottles home to share later. We hope to see you again one day!

Fabulous experience on this Grenache tour. Personally shown around the property by the wine maker Will Shields. Country hospitality at it’s finest, with a wonderful tasting and cheese platter to finish off a informative afternoon. Thanks to Adele for arranging.

This site is well worth a visit apart from its very good wines. As you drive in you realise that it is more than just a winery. The church is stark and beautiful on your right amongst the carefully manicured gardens. The signage alerts you to the Retreat centre. Yes, a very peaceful area for a retreat. Then there is a beautiful grassed area and eventually the winery. The entrance through the huge vats is impressive. The space is well set up for a tasting. We were well looked after by Maddie. We were so pleased to have visited this very old winery with its interesting history in the area.

Terrible service and they weren’t even busy - at one point there were only two other people there and we still ended up leaving because we’d already waited 20 minutes to start a tasting!
