- AucklandWizAuckland, New Zealand1,621 contributionsNice Tropical North Queensland BeachThis was our first trip to this area and we enjoyed it. Palm Cove was very quiet due to off season but also lack of tourists due to Corono Virus. Nice for us as easy to park, no full restaurants or anything which probably left the area with little vibe but still I prefer quiet. There are a number of restaurants along the foreshore, although we thought they were quite expensive. Even a hamburger was not cheap. There isn’t general shopping as such but not warranted in such an environment. We had a swim within the stinger nets which was nice and warm but somewhat controlled which obviously is the purpose but also makes it a bit of a boring swim. Later I found out the Irukandji Box jellyfish which is about 1cm in size can make you very very sick can come through the stinger net holes but was also informed that the lifeguards run a smaller net through the swimming area throughout the day (whether this is correct or not) but they are also looking out for the salt water crocodiles that can come over the top of the net when the water is a little rough. The water isn’t a tropical blue so really the lure of the hotels pool is much stronger. There is a jetty you can go for a walk on also. In the end we would go for a periodic drive along the foreshore to have a nosey but other than that there was not a lot of need or visits to the beach front area.Visited February 2020Written 11 March 2020
- peterwV975TLMalaga, Spain907 contributionsSafe swimming zone and plenty of restaurants.Spent most of the afternoon in the beach after lunch in the Surf Life Saving Club....recommended. There is a large floating collar in the sea with a continous fine mesh net slung beneath that drops to the sea floor to prevents the nasty sea creatures that sting and bite thise of us entering the swimming zone. There is a Surf Life Guard in attendance. The water was very warm, lots of tourists and locals with their children in the protected bathing area. Like swimming in a very warm bath. A long stretch of sandy beach with a tree covered shore line, fresh water showers ,BBQ areas and a good mix of restaurants along the road, Williams Esplanade. You can drive along the length of the beach but there us limited parking places close to the beach. The largest car park is by the jetty where you first enter Williams Esplanade.Visited March 2020Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 March 2020
- SunnycoastAndySunshine Coast, Australia65 contributionsBeautiful locationWe had 3 nights here and have really enjoyed our time. The Southern end of the esplanade seems a bit more modern (avoid portofino restaurant though). We also went to Trinity beach (10 min south) and that was definitely worth a drive for a look around and a meal at the tavern there.Visited February 2020Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 February 2020

Warm waters at 23 degrees, some days clearer than others but swim between the flags and enjoy the Coral Sea.
Life guards are friendly and have great information. Look out for dolphins on the calm days😊🌊☀️

The Palm Cove Beach and the village that fronts the water has retained a good quality atmosphere and has avoided too much tackiness. The beach has good sand and pretty views south and north.

Palm Cove is the perfect place to stay. Not far from Cairns, with a beautiful beach and lovely shops and a good variety of restaurants. We stayed here for our honeymoon 27 years ago and I was so pleased that it hadn’t lost its chilled, laidback vibe. Love it here and can’t wait to return.

Palm Cove is one of the better beach suburbs on the northern side of Cairns. It has a range of good accommodation, including several excellent resorts, rental accom and a beachfront caravan park, and there are many restaurants, to suit most tastes and pockets, adjacent to the beach. Two small virtual beachfront supermarkets will get you organised for those last minute household things you need to make your new home from home more comfortable, or a Coles supermarket is a short drive back towards Cairns on the main highway. Smithfield Shopping Centre (a bit further towards Cairns) will have anything you can’t find locally. The beach itself is picturesque and tropical, although swimming is best done within the stinger net enclosure in stinger season. A long pier is perfect for the keen sea fishermen and women.

Such a beautiful and easily accessible beach that runs the length of the esplanade. The 110 bus from Cairns stops at the edge of the sand and carparks are equally close although hotly contested. Clean and fringed by palm trees it is something out of a postcard so it was just unfortunate then that we couldn't swim due to the stingers. Despite the lifeguards closing the beach, some brave souls ventured in - not us but the temptation was overwhelming! A walk across the road to casual cafes and the ice cream shop made it a great day at the beach.

Located just about half an hour away from Cairns, this beautiful beach is lined with palm trees and a convenient series of businesses behind it across the road.
The sand is comfortable, the beach itself is very clean, the water is pleasant, and the views are excellent. During stinger season, they have a designated area for swimming, much like other beaches along the Northwest coastline.
It's definitely worth the trip up, especially if you are headed further north as it's only a short detour off the main road.

The first leg of the Northern Beaches Leisure Trail runs from Palm Cove to Clifton Beach, and according to the Council website will eventually connect Palm Cove with Cairns. I jumped on my bike to try it out. Four kms of paved track and boardwalk begins 100m down Triton St at the southern end of Palm Cove and runs through delightful swamp, beach and forest, as far as the southern end of Clifton Beach foreshore. Its a nice, shady, well-made, level track through a beautiful landscape, ideal for walkers, scooters, and cyclists. It didn't seem very well-used, perhaps because Council has not invested in good signage or maps. After about 1.5k there is a baffling intersection with an old vandalised sign simply saying 'Welcome to the Argentea Boardwalk'. Turn left here for Clifton Beach unless you want to get lost in the burbs.

Visited June - July 2022. It was absolutely amazing and just as you see it in photos. Beautifully lined Palm Trees, really close to all the restaurants and cafes and great walk on the beach. Easy to get to and enough parking space nearby. I regret not having breakfast while watching the sunrise.

Yes. Shower and change in the middle of Palm Cove opposite to the Australian surf control.

SOOOO disappointed to hear we cannot swim in the ocean! Is this just seasonal? We will be there in June and were hoping for some beach time - is it too dangerous to swim off Palm Coast? Just wondering if we should reconsider our hotel reservations...

The main problem for swimmers in summer is jellyfish(ie stingers) but in the dry season (winter) (June is the dry season) they are a minute risk. Crocdiles can be an issue but there patrolled beaches and you will be advised if there is a croc around, which is rare anyway. As far as sharks are concerned there are sharks in the waters off every ocean beach on the planet, used the patrolled beach and you will be safer.

Kathleen, I think the response from Lou Charlie is perfect. The only thing I can add is don't be put off visiting Palm Cove because you can't swim in the ocean. It's a gorgeous spot with a variety of accommodation options - with lovely pools. 🌼

Hi , is the beach crowded in the winter months? July-August? Also, can we swim in the water? With the crocs and the jelly fish?
Many thanks!

That time of year is fine as crowds go. If you prefer it even less crowded avoid the two week school holidays at the beginning of July. Swimming is safe as long as you swim in the patrolled areas between the flags. You can take off to a lot of other places from there.

Hi. We are in Palm cove at the moment and have driven to Ellis beach twice. The drive is about 5-10 mins along the highway and this would be the only way to walk. I wouldn't recommend it and didn't see anyone walking the highway is quite narrow in this part and there is no footpath. And you'll have lovely weather for your stay.

Hi,
We are getting married in Palm Cove August next year. We have been advised that the north end near the jetty is the ideal place because it is quieter and less windy there. Please can you tell me if I would need a car to get me there from The Reef House Hotel or is it walkable? How long would it take? Is there a road the whole way along? Is there parking up near the jetty. I also hear there is a market Friday nights - when do they set up as we are getting married on a Friday?
Thanks for all your help.
Best wishes,
Ingrid

I stayed at the Reef House last March and yes, you can definitely walk there. Also I would like to say that you'll love the Reef House hotel. It's a beautiful, serene hotel. I could have moved in and never returned. Have a great time!
