- Jose MLethbridge, Canada173 contributionsGreat waterfall. Worth visitingIt's almost an hour drive from Moshi and about an hour hike thereafter. The waterfall definitely worth a visit. I have visited many waterfalls in different parts of the world. This is a great water fall. An underrated one!!! Even the hike in itself is beautiful. One is walking through lush farmlands. The coffee tour which most tour companies attach with this is underwhelmingVisited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 26 February 2024
- Oleg CSt. Petersburg, Russia233 contributionsTake swimsuits/swimming trunksWe went on an excursion before climbing Kilimanjaro. I really liked it, the waterfall is really big. Those who are not afraid can climb into the bowl and take a photo, the water is cool, but not icy - take swimming trunks/swimsuits, we were not warned about this option, we went in like this. The second part of the tour, the local community and coffee farm. We learned a lot of new facts about how coffee is grown and processed and were able to participate in all stages of preparing the drink using traditional means. The guys' songs were especially incendiary. After this there was lunch with local cuisine. Everything was edible and tasty (unusual), there were no consequences after that. It was very interesting to try what the locals eat and this was almost the only opportunity because... As such, there are not many cafes/restaurants in the nearby town of Moshi, if they exist at all, and it is extremely rare (almost impossible) to find something local in them; anyway, it will be something adapted to European tastes. Therefore, the excursion is also an opportunity to get acquainted with local cuisine. On the trail from the waterfall, locals sell fresh fruits: avocado, passion fruit, bananasVisited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 12 March 2024

- Valerie TBoston, Massachusetts4 contributionsBeautiful local experience! What a wonderful experience! We went as a family, and it far surpassed our expectations. The guide showed us all sorts of plants on the way and explained how they fit into local life, and had an expert eye for chameleons! The hike was lovely and not challenging, and the waterfall itself was breathtakingly beautiful. And afterwards, there was delicious local food and a demonstration of how coffee is made from the local coffee plants.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 July 2024
- Maureen M3 contributionsBeautiful waterfall and fun coffee experience! An easy hike through coffee farms takes you to a beautiful waterfall. Afterwards our guide, Johnny, took us to a home where we had a traditional Tanzanian lunch (delicious) followed but a demonstration on making coffee from the raw coffee bean to the poured cup and they had us participating in every step. Best sup of coffe we've ever had! We had a lot of fun with Johnny and his friends.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 19 October 2024

What a day? Huh, we made coffee from scratch up to the final stage we were a group of six friends and we really had a lot of fun, we also had local banana beer, this is the must visit place our guide Monica was really good and knowledgable, she ensured we were safe and enjoyed our trip I will always recommend this awesome female guide. - rolandiTanzania142 contributionsGreat, limited experienceDuring our visit to Moshi town, we made a trip to Materuni Waterfalls. Situated at a higher altitude, the falls are accessible by any motor vehicle, though the final kilometer requires a short hike. The trail winds through a picturesque local village and a small coffee plantation, offering a glimpse of rural life along the way. The waterfall itself is well-maintained and impressive, with a serene, natural beauty perfect for photos. However, the experience is somewhat limited, as there are no additional activities or attractions in the area. It's a shame, as the setting has potential for more. Unless you’re particularly keen on soaking in the tranquility, you'll likely spend no more than 30 minutes here before running out of things to do. While the hike and the falls are enjoyable, it’s best suited for a brief excursion rather than a full-day adventure.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 December 2024
- Wander325465545721 contributionUnique Waterfalls ExperienceMateruni Waterfalls is a must-visit, not just for tourists but also for those in the diaspora! While the route to the falls may be a bit more rustic compared to other waterfalls I've visited, it adds to the authentic, unique experience that only Africa can offer. My kids had a great time, and our guide, Andrea Materu, was fantastic—very patient and even assisted my children with navigating the steeper sections. I highly recommend him. We were greeted with warmth and kindness from the moment we arrived, and every detail, transportation, the hike, timing, and even a delightful local lunch afterward, was taken care of. The balance between adventure and relaxation was just right, and we never felt rushed or overwhelmed. The whole day flowed smoothly, leaving us with nothing to worry about except enjoying the beauty around us. Awesome waterfalls – – definitely worth the visit. I would suggest doing this trip the day after you arrive and before you start your safari. A great way to cure Jetlag the scenery is awesome and the waterfall is worth a visit – – definitely take your swimsuit so you can go for a swim. There are vendors along the way that sell drinks as well as various pieces of art and reasonably priced try and organize a Coffee tour as well – – also worth the time

Well worth the visit if you have a spare day in Moshi. Beautiful location, the water is very cold and deep so do not go in if you cannot swim. It's dangerous and I have heard some sad stories of people who enter who cannot swim. The guides can be a bit money grabbing at the "entrance" so be prepared to haggle. Regardless, it's still great to go and I will be taking friends there in the future.

The falls are beautiful.
However, be very careful with whom to book the expedition because there are a lot of men waiting at the entrance to ask you for pennies, arguing about who will know your guide and who tax you money.
They're super intimidating and they just walk into people's bubbles without question.
We only had one driver there so the experience was terrible.

I have been traveling in Tanzania for 3 weeks but this was definitely the worst experience. We travelled with Dala Dala and already one stop before the Materuni village a guy hopped in and explained that we need to pay for a guide and entrance fee to the falls. We got out of the car and we weren’t sure if we want to go to the waterfalls or just do the coffee experience so we wanted to walk around the village and decide. 2 people started to follow us and said that we cannot even walk in the village unless we paid the official entrance fee. We have opened our book guide and wanted to read about the area - we were just standing there. The two guys insisted that we need to pay them. They started to be aggressive and even screaming at us. We gave up and went with them to the official office which was only a table with one guest book. Nowhere was written anything about the fees or rules. We wanted to see some official badge or document from them but they were not able to provide anything. We decided to leave the village and about 10 men were screaming at us that we should go back to our country. I even think that the “official office” is not set up by the government but by a group of village individuals themselves to rip off tourists. The waterfalls might be beautiful but the hustle before is not worth it.

Beware of a guide called "Rasi". When me and my brother arrived to the ticket office by taxi from Moshi (15,000 TZS roundtrip), he was waiting for us there and welcomed us saying that he was going to be our tour guide. He had given us guidelines for the prices (10 dollars entry and 10,000 TZS/hour guiding fee). We wanted to pay for the tickets there, but he said no, let's go, we would discuss that later. As it was 2:40pm and the tour would last at least 1 hour 30 minutes, he should have known we wouldn't make it back before the office closed at 4:00pm.
On the way back, he said we could pay him directly, because the office was closed. We asked for a receipt/ticket which he could not offer. I had seen on a blog from 2019 that entry for tourists was 10,000 TZS, he said no, it was 10 dollars (23,000 TZS). I asked for a proof but he was adamant and he said we went along on the trip so we agreed on any prices (which was not true because he encouraged us to just leave the office behind because we would "discuss" everything after the trip). I did not have that much cash with me, so we agreed we would meet in town at an ATM.
Down at the ATM I showed him the blog again about the 10,000 TZS entry, he would not let go of the 10 dollars/person idea but couldn't back it up either. I thought alright, it's not the end of the world, I'll pay him and it will rest on his conscience. Regarding his guiding fees... he said 10,000TZS/hour and asked for 20,000 for the one and a half hours. I said I thought we'd pay him 10,000 (based on the blog), but I would meet him halfway at 15,000 + if we followed his hourly rates, that would make sense too. He started getting really aggressive at that point and saying that 15,000 was per person (I was with my brother) and let's give him 20,000 instead of the "total" of 30,000 and that would be fine. I was firm about giving him 15,000, then he said he wouldn't "do anything bad" to us this time (???) so just hand over the money and that's it. When I gave him the money he turned around and walked away without saying thank you or good-bye.
Missing values: openness, honesty, integrity, politeness

Just coming back from our group tour to this beautifuly waterfall. With no hesitation I can recomend anyone to include the visit to Materuni waterfall in his/her bucket-list as it is a beautifuly place which can be accessed from both moshi and Arusha City.
I have never been at Materuni before - just hearing from my friends about how beautifily the place is!
then we organised ourselves as a group with our directors to have a visit just to experience the waterfall and the sourounding. What I can say is everyone in a group was flattered by the great experience that was nourished by our two local guide.
Everything was well organised !. Our guides come to pick us from Moshi town "about 45minutes" and start briefing us on what to expect and how we should walk just to makesure everyone reach to the destination and we have all necessary information possible for successfully tour.
Arriving at the village we cleared registration process and start our walking toward the waterfall while we are amazed by beautifully scenery and stories of the lifestyle of local people around the village from our guide. "you should expect the up&down trail"
The waterfall start to be seen from the distance and once arrived, we put off our shoes and dip our legs in a very cold water while the blowing moisture come to our side. It is a very nice place for meditation, swimming and refreshment.
We will come back as the place don't dissapoint.

We loved the waterfall and our visit to the village. Our tour included learning about coffee and great lunch provided by women of the village. Our guides were excellent as well.
My only issue was the description of the hike I have seen here. The hike was on a fairly well maintained trail, but there is about a 500 ft. (150 meters) climb and decent on the trail. There are a few areas of poor footing. I recommend at least one hiking pole (which was made available by the guides) if you are above 55 or in poor physical condition. Also, you need to feel capable to climb and descend the gradual hills on the hike.

Is this place reachable by a private car, a sedan? or 4wd is a must?

You can get there in a regular car. Unless it has been raining and the final stretch of road turns to mud --- then you need a 4-wheeler.

Hello
I’m in Moshi for 3 days would like to know where to get a cheaper public transport to Materumi Falls and Chamke hot springs not having to use the hotel organized private taxis as they are a bit pricey for me, Jessica

hi just go to the bus stage in moshi town ,ask for the matatu that goes to materuni ,it costs Tsh 2000 or less and stops directly at materuni offices where you pay for your trip. The trip costs 10000Tsh but a guide will request for an extra fee, also visiting the coffee farm tour comes at an extra cost. The bus to chamka springs is also found at the same stage but it doesn't go to the springs ,it costs 1000tsh to kichwa ngombe then from there you have to take a bajaj ,its a long distance so the bajaj will have to wait for you until you finish and take you back to kichwa ngombe ,you pay at the end of the trip .You can look for people in your hotel to tag along, I did that with my hostel mates

My sister and I are taking a day trip to the Moshi/Kilimanjaro area in February (we are in Tanzania for a very brief time). I have a few questions:
1) Do we have to go with a formal guide to see the falls? We won't arrive in Moshi until about 12pm and most sites I see say their tours begin at 9AM. Can we do a self-guided hike to the falls, or must we go with an organization?
2) How far is Moshi/the falls from Kilimanjaro? Are there any good places we should go within the area to get good views of the mountain? We don't have enough time to climb this time around, but I would love to see it.
Thanks!

Hi Alexa, It will be great to contact Materuni Waterfalls so that they can organize a village tour guide who will take you to the waterfalls, chagga hot lunch, coffee tour for you, this will help you to experience a full day at Materuni village
OR contact a tour operator in Moshi, this will help you to connect you to a nice village tour guide
Thanks
