On the advice of our host, we got up at 4.30am to be at the entrance to Horton Plains Park when it opened at 6am. Coming from Haputale, the nearest entrance is Ohiya, much less busy than the main entrance where it seems to take until 1:30 to enter the park.
We went there after a night of intense rain, so the animals were sheltered and the sky still covered. However, we were able to appreciate the beauty of this park, which does not deserve the asking price (37,000 Sri Lankan rupees for 2 adults, 1 teenager and 1 child).
My advice: adjust your arrival time (and your sleep time) according to the weather. Take good shoes; hiking is complicated in many places. Follow the path (not always obvious) to avoid ending up in impassable places. At the entrance, you are made to empty the contents of your plastic packaging into kraft paper bags, to avoid waste in the park. I admit that I do not adhere to this practice which, in the end, creates twice as much waste and softens cookies (but that is because I am among those who pay attention to their waste and do not throw it everywhere).

I paid a visit with my family on 22nd February and unfortunately they have changed the closing hours. Previously it was 4 pm. Now it's 2.30 p.m. After that they don't issue tickets. So if you are planning make sure that you be by the entry gate before 2.30pm.
Later on we noticed a board showing all new amended times by the road at Boralanda junction. But the texts are too small for a passing vehicle to see. And even the heading says tickets are being issued until 04 pm. But we were there by. 3.20 pm.
Would have make a huge difference if the board and details were more prominent.

We arrived at 6 am. The hike was nice. beatiful scenery. we saw cameleons and a giant squirrel and heard a monkey.
we paid 24.000 SLR (50 USD) for two persons.
Given that you can find similar places all over the world (e.g. swiss alps at sunrise with chamois and groundhogs) I find it completely overpriced.

Entrance is certainly expensive, but contributing to the preservation of the country's incredible flora and fauna is priceless. Contrary to some opinions, there are many animals to observe, you just have to know how to be silent and stop to see them appear and observe them (given the noise of certain groups, it does not surprise me that they are hiding !).
We had good weather, however you really have to reach World's End before 9:30 a.m. (so start the walk from the left) otherwise, despite the superb weather, the clouds appear and block the view. We had a partially clear view at 9 a.m., then ate there and just in time to finish the picnic, the clouds had invaded the view. The second part of the walk is very exposed to the sun, very beautiful landscape but cover your head, shoulders and cover yourself with cream so as not to burn because it is extremely hot from 8:30 a.m. (even though we were in fleece on arrival !). A must-see in the region that is worth waking up at dawn.

Really enjoyable hike with beautiful views. We went as a large group of mixed hiking abilities, everyone enjoyed and completed hike. The park is well kept with no rubbish on the track.
Restroom doors locks need fixing, alot of them didn't lock/shut properly.

We loved the horton plains. Before going I was a bit skeptical since I was reading the reviews of it being too expensive and nothing to see. But this was definitely worth it! Amazing views with a comfortable easy hike. One of the highlight of our trip and would definitely not skip it. I would recommend starting with the falls first, which is left of the track.

Hortain Plains National Park is the largest plain situated in central hills of Sri Lanka. There are two entries to this place named as Pattipola and Ohiya gates. Hortain plain gates can be easily approached by train. In addition you can drive from Nuweraeliya to Hortain Plains.
Circular trail of Hortain Plains is the main attraction and you will come across Chimney Pool, Baker's Fall, Great World's End and Small World's end along this circular trail.
It is advisable to visit the place early in the morning as mist can cover up the view of World's end.
Camping at Hortain plain is an unique experience due to chilling cold at night. There are three camp sites and you need to pre book it from Wild life department office.
Hiking Kirigalpoththa and Thotupala mountains (second and third highest of SL) are another two treks which you can do in one day.

I found the small 'end of World' view much more pleasant and beautiful than the actual one. Probably it was too crowded on top.. Dont stress yourself too much if you are not able to make it to the top. View is equally if not better from the lower level

We arrived around 1.30 to the fate and we had to wait 1/2hr until ticket counter person finish his lunch. He spoke very rude way to us. Ticket price is too much. Nothing to see for the overpriced ticket. Avoid this place. Not recommended at all.

We went Horton Plain NP and is one of memorable tour. As we were advice to go early we start 5am from Nuwaraeliya. Hence we were able to witness beautiful sunrise at the top.NP is real example for the bio diversity of SL, We were able to witness so many Flora and fiana.

I love hiking through pine forests and I was wondering if there are any nearby ,accessible pine forested areas to hike about..better if there is inside the park itself....
Thanks....

Hi, we are planning on going to Horton Plains tomorrow. Can we do the trail to worlds end by ourselves or do we need a guide? Is there a clear trail to follow? Thanks in advance for your help.
Written 29 June 2019
Sorry for the extremely late reply. As we remember it, there was one point in the trail, where there were 2 paths neither of the paths were signed and the tour guide thankfully showed us the way. There weren't other trekkers that we could have followed as there were none at the time. Waiting for other trekkers isn't always advisable or safe. So from our experience and for safety's sake we would say hire a guide.

Hi we are going in this month and interested to visit Horton plains. As we are all above 60. Can we hike all along the National park. Another thing which will be the nearest place to the national park Nuwera elliya or Ella because we will stay in both places.
Written 1 April 2019
I stayed in Ella. You must leave early to trek as there are a lot of people. I’m 64 and had no problem doing whole trek although you must be careful in places track is quiet rough and rocky and you need to be very careful of your footing. Just take your time and take plenty of water with you. Enjoy. There is a must go to restaurant in Ella. I’ll try and remember it and get back to you.enjoy...j

Hi people..ill be visiting srilanka in april and was considering hortans plains.however i have 2 kids aged 4 and 6 .will they be able to enjoy and is it safe for them?? Please guide !!
Written 14 March 2019
I would not take young kids on the hike unless you have taken them on something similar before. its long, the path is narrow and uneven. there are parts where adults needed to climb up/down rocky areas using hands and feet that would be difficult for young kids. The hike is not difficult in comparison to hiking in Nepal for example but it is also not an easy walk by any means.

Hello,
I am planning to visit horton national park. I want to know below points from experienced persons:
1. I am planning to see world's end, baker's fall, Bambarakanda Waterfall, Lanka Ella Waterfall and Devil’s staircase. Is it possible to cover everything in one day or we need two days for that?
2. How is the view of national park in mid august?
Thanks a lot

Its a 10km circuitous route. The route covers all the above. Takes 3 to 4 hrs maybe a little more if you want to do it leisurely. Definitely carry lots of water. Not less than 2 lt each. Also some snack is worthwhile. To enjoy most start very early morning. Its chilly at 6am but quickly warms up. The views are similar year round

Hola, Benji3636: ¿Qué te gustaría saber sobre esta atracción?
Can you recommend the best hotel to stay in to access the hiking in the park and is it necessary to have a guide.
Thanks

We are foreigners that visited in APR2018 and I've just looked at our entry ticket / receipt. For 1X local adult, 3X foreign adults & 1X foreign child we paid a total of 10,886LKR. Note the difference between a local adult 60LKR and a foreign adult 6754.50LKR then there were service fees, VAT etc.

We have just booked to go to Sri Lanka and was wondering is it best to hike as part of a tour or can you just do it on your own? Is it relatively easy to navigate?
Thanks
Amanda
Written 14 April 2018
Hi Amanda,
I did this trip by myself.
The hike can be done alone, no problem, it is a circular easy hike.
Nevertheless, there are two important things you should know:
1. No public transportation available to Horton plains so you should consider take a driver to wait for you. (don't take the tuk tuk as they often got stuck on the hill)
2. Upon arrive, ticket purchase can take up to two hours waiting time, as only one person sell the tickets for the same day and the queue is quite lone. I waited for more than 1 hour just to pay the entrance fees.
Have fun!!!
