I enjoyed this place, I learn a lot about how the Romans took the gold from Las Medulas, how they channeled the mountains, eroded the terrain and the use of water and tunnels for extraction of gold.

About 5000 kg of gold were extracted from the mountains. The Romans used a complicated system of canals and shafts to get access to the precious metal in order to finance their army. The changes to the landscape are impressive.

Las Médulas was made by the Romans, washing the mountains in search of gold. The result is an open air mine, that takes your breath away. We drove to the town of Orellan, and followed the sign to the Mirador de la Orellan. Road is...More

It’s a bit of a drive from city center to here but the narrow, steep and winding roads are easily forgotten once you step off your car and see the scenery and breath in the fresh mountain air. After parking, there is another steep hill...More

One of “must see”. It is area of old Roman gold mine. They run two aqueducts to flush down entire mount. I think it was great environmental disaster of that times. Fortunately Nature reclaimed this place and rearranged it in great style. I can assure...More

This area is now a UNESCO World heritage Site. As the landscape was obscured by fog at the time of our visit, we were very disappointed not to be able to see the physical changes created by the mining activities of the Romans. There is,...More

We went to Las Medulas without a clear idea of what we would find or what we could do there. We knew that this was the site of Roman gold mining activities and had seen the photos - but found the official web sites quite...More

There is an special place to see the scenery. You should go to Orellán. There is a landscape area. You drive there, and then you walk just 5 minutes. Pictures there are incredible. This place is world heritage. Deserves a lolt to go there

Such a pleasure to notice there are still beautiful things to see without paying a lot. You can drive all the way up (even with a mobile home, if you do some effort) and park there for free. Then it's only a 10 minute walk...More
