The road running within the Moraca River Canyon is one of the most spectacular roads in the world. Located in Montenegro, the road traversing the canyon is called E65. Riddled with countless cliff-side bends and tunnels, this road is basically out to get you, but if you survive you’ll be blown away by the beauty of the landscape that surrounds you.
Moraca River Canyon separates Moračke planine range from Sinjajevina range. It’s located between Podgorica and Kolasin. This part of the canyon is called “Platije”. The highway is built along the edge of the narrow canyon.
Morača canyon covers the south-eastern part of the central region of Montenegro. This road is passable during most part of the year. It is closed only in case of abundant snowing or great rockslides. The main travel route connecting the north and the south of Montenegro runs along the Morača Canyon.
The surface of the road is asphalt. It includes several tunnels and is very dangerous. This road is passable during most part of the year. It is closed only in case of abundant snowing or great rockslides. You can enjoy in observing the beautiful contrast between steep, dark cliffs and light, green river, while round, white peaks of Bjelasica glow in the distance, at moments, this beauty becomes scary!

Moraca Canyon is a place you have to see.
Also, section that you have to drive at least once.
The fun begins about fifteen kilometers after Kolasin and hundred from entering the MNE from Serbia (depends on where you crossed the "border").
These fifty kilometers is the best part of the road from entering Montenegro until Skadar Lake.
Along the way you will follow the river ...and Morača will follow you.
I believe that you will often stop the car.
Prepare the camera, insert a larger memory card.
Take your time because it is not simply crossing the sections. This is the beauty revealed behind every corner, at the exit of every tunnel.
Road carved into the cliff underneath which meanders the Moraca, skipping over rocks, rushing to Lake Skadar.
Arm yourself with patience. This is not the road that forgives the rush.
It's road for enjoying... the ride, landscapes and crystal emerald river.

I have followed the Moraca River Canyon by bus twice in my life and it was an unforgetable experience. The scenery is beautiful with the river in the bottom of the ravine and the green and gray mountains around. At the same time it is scary, particularly on the way north of Podgorica, as the road is sometimes just at the limit of the ravine and as regularly stones with flowers, and photos, reminds you of the unfortunate persons who have fallen down into the Moraca river. I would not take this road by car in wintertime, when there is snow or even if it is a very rainy day. But is still an extraordinately beautiful site.

We took a drive through the river Moraca Canyon & didn't realize before now they are the second deepest in the world, second only to the Grand Canyons in the U.S. The drive was absolutely amazing & is situated within the National Park Dumitor which is a UNESCO site of natural beauty. We stopped at the 13th century Moraca Monastery where the monks are self sufficient. It's situated in a wonderful peaceful enclave & it's a very special place. There's a small Byzantine church with frescos & icons there & you can also buy honey & a couple of other products they produce. On the drive we were surrounded by huge mountain peaks & glacier lakes, one of which we stopped at, Black Lake. We also crossed the river Tara, where you could fly across the canyon on a zip-line a couple of hundred metres above the canyon!! It was a long drive as we came from Budva, so be prepared (but it was SO well worth it as we would not have missed it for anything!)

It's a beautiful drive but to be honest, i was expecting more after reading some reviews. I think Tara canyon and especially Piva canyon are much more impressive! Maybe I just prefer more dramatic and rocky mountains, not so forest cover ones. Worth a drive, but if you have time, go to see the ones mentioned above :)

My wife and I travelled through the Moraca gorge taking it in turns to sit by the window. If travelling from Budva try to sit on the left hand side of the coach for the most spectacular views. At some points you can see down to the bottom of the gorge and the river actually looks a turquoise colour even in the mists that swirl around the mountains. Coaches do stop for a photo opportunity but be very careful because the road is quite busy and the room for manoeuvre isn't much!

A beautiful canyon with clear blue-turquoise water. Surrounded by trees. It's a pity that exist only one or two sites for viewing the river.

Certainly one heck of a drive! One of the best Montenegro has to offer! Drove this morning and it was as good as advertised by others.

It is so easy to enjoy this lovely canyon as the main road from Podgorica up north goes along this river. There are few places where you can stop the car and watch the canyon safely.
