If you are limited on time in the area like we were wouldn't do this part of Golden Bay area as walk along beach area very long to get to sand dunes which are impressive but we are from west australian so didn't compare with some of our region. Go to the archways on other side instead if you have limited time. That walk is amazing. But if you have lots of time have a look at this part of region

We walked from Wharariki Beach to Puponga along the hilltop Track. Superb views were worth the uphill slog.

Amazing walk amongst wildlife, marine life, stunning white sand beaches and magestic rock formations and headlands. A must visit for those in the top fo the south.

My wife and I walked the 30 mins from the Triangle Flat carpark (via Freeman Access Road) to the Ocean Beach and left to Fossil Point. Generally a pretty easy walk for the most part with a few styles to climb over the fences (livestock - sheep and cattle are about but were just observers) and the only steeper part a narrow track toward the beach end where you walked down to the beach and the uphill return trip back.
Once back at the carpark we walked the inside of the spit for a bit, but there was a lot of debris such as logs and seagrasses that had been washed up making the beach less inviting and a bit of an obstacle course.
A beautiful autumn day, warm and sunny, but not too hot for walking.
The road is sealed for the most part to this point with only the final part gravel.

On a stunning day the walk up cape farewell, along the hilltops to pillar point lighthouse, old mans bluff trig and down onto the beach and farewell spit (and loop back on the road, but the road trip is not very nice so if you can get a ride between the two points this would be ideal). The views are wonderful.
The walk from cape farewell to wharariki beach is not very nice - its not well formed and the paddocks are steep, very close to cliff edges and you will get wet feet crossing the creek. you are much better to walk to wharariki beach direct from the carpark

You can’t visit New Zealand’s South Island without visiting the Farewell Spit. It’s a windy walk in the beach but not windy in the more protected trails and dirt road of the spit’s interior. No waves but plenty of strong wind on the bay side of the spot and large waves, sand dunes and plenty more wind on the ocean side. There are organized tours our you can park at the car park and tramp around on your own.

We missed out on going to Farewell Spit over 40yrs ago, so it was a no brainer that we would go this time. Well worth it. The cost was a bit high (for us NZers), it was for 6 1/2 hours. We went with family & had a fab day - saw the migrating birds coming in, seals, the lighthouse & lots more. Would certainly recommend.

Enjoyed the visit to Farewell spit. Parking was plentiful and enjoyed the approx 1hr sign posted walk across the spit and back around along the very big sandy beach. Also headed to the headland and had a great view.

The contrasts of this place were incredible. We had a fine windy day with some really light rain at times. This made it surreal being up on the headlands and then latter down on the beach with the sun going down. There were only a couple of other people around. We drove to all the walking spots and did all the shorter walks except the light house as we ran out of time. Truly memorable and worth the drive.

We were lucky enough to get there on a sunny day right on low tide. The place looked quite placid. Within 15 minutes the waves started to ramp up and it looked like the real West Coast. Lovely.
