I have never seen so many seals so close in my life. They were just everywhere, all over the rocks, in the water - a truly wonderful experience, especially for seal lovers. I could have just spent days there watching them. But I had a whole half day and it was pure bliss.

You can enjoy the views while watching the seals cavort in the water or laze about on the beach and rocks. There are plenty of places to park and watch at the side of the road.

So cute and interesting to visit. Hope it is not permanently closed by the earthquake. Easy to locate and park.

Loved kaikoura and look back on this please with a real fondness several months on. The scenery and dramatic coastline and waves are spectacular and you get a real special view of the wild seals lazing about in the rocks. Jusy Lovely.

Having seals in CA, viewing the adults was not a prime objective for me. I was hoping that the pups were still frolicking by the waterfall. It's a pleasant 10 minute walk to the falls, which are just average, but no pups. I was able to get a couple of close up shots of the fur seals. A great place... More

We drove 2 hours plus from Christchurch to here just to see the seals and it's worth it! That's about 1 week before the earthquake happens.. The amount of seals sunbathing on the rocky shores is breathtaking! From far they looked like still rocks but when you watch closer they are moving, playing and catching fishes! Some tourists tried to... More

Stopped whilst on the way from Blenheim to Christchurch (8 days before the earthquake). Whilst there we could see large numberes of birds (Shags) on the nearby cliffs & below us the Seal Colony. Well worth stopping for this NZ Seal Sanctuary

There were many seals along this coastline but at the time of our visit, the best seal viewing by far was at Point Kean, at the base of the Kaikoura Peninsula walk. Can't imagine how it looks now as we were there the day before the quake.

This is a great place to stop ,stretch your legs and enjoy the antics of the seal colony! The man made viewing platform is close enough to get a good view ( and smell! ) of the colony and far enough away to be safe for both humans and seals. Nice place to break your journey - a different kind... More
