Absolutely love this area and the walk is beautiful although be prepared to walk up and down stairs. No good for wheelchairs or strollers but such a well designed and beautiful place. Waterfall and very large Kauri trees and the fauna in magical.

We decided to take our 2 small kids on this track as a side thing to do whilst in Whangarei. Even though we didn't come prepared in terms of walking shoes etc the track was very easy going and rewarding. We opted for the track that ends up at Whangarei Falls (approx 45mins each way) and we weren't disappointed. So many lush and majestic areas as you stroll through relatively flat ground by the stream to the waterfall. Truly spectacular, like an ad for NZ you see in the airport on big billboards as to its natural beauty and well worth a stroll. The waterfall was beautiful with many vantage points. A little chilly the day we went but that didn't stop other game people taking a swim in the waterfall pool. Next time I would pack a little picnic, walk to the falls and have lunch/swim for a spell. Truly Wonderful!

Took my 4 year old daughter and 70 year grandma here. Had a lovely hour or so walking through the bush looking at the Kauri trees, punga etc. Easy relaxed walking so close to the city.

Our car rear windscreen was smashed in the car park. While we were cleaning up the mess, two of of our group of six, were taunted verbally. There are huge, Lock It, Hide It or Lose It signs at every attraction that we visited in Whangarei. Most attractions we visited had some very friendly City Safe Community Ambassadors, and we see that the city is doing a lot to protect visitors. We asked the City Safe Community Ambassador at the Kauri Park whether it was OK to park where we had parked, just 20 meters from the entrance to the park and he said it was OK. However, on returning after a half hour walk through the park we found our car rear window broken. I will not visit Whangarei again. In addition to the more than $1000 we spent in Whangarei in 2 days, we had to spend another $500 as insurance excess and many hours getting the car fixed and the ordeal is not over yet as we are still car less while waiting for it to be fixed and we have visitors from overseas who are leaving with a bad impression of New Zealand. We also had to cancel the rest of our planned holiday activities.

Lovely bush walk very easy to do
Beautiful Kauri trees
Go can also walk to Whangarei Falls from here on the river side walk . You end up at bottom of the Whangarei Falls and if you cross the bridge a track leads up to top of the falls where you cross over and go left to find the track down . At the bottom turn right back to Ah Reed

As a New Zealander who was raised in Whangarei, I never feel as if I have been in New Zealand until I go for a bush walk. My place of choice is AH Reed Kauri Park, which has been developed over the years and is the most wonderful place to enjoy nature and see some young Kauri trees!
The aerial walkway built to protect the flora and forna is great and fun due to its movement. Being in the bush here is so peaceful and restore ones sole. There are places to sit and relax, whilst you listen to the babbling stream.
It is great walking for older people too with gentle inclines and well laid out paths. A must to reconnect with nature.

A lovely canopy walk through native trees including some big Kauri's. Walked up lots of steps to see the waterfall but as it had not rained much for the last month there was not much water pouring down the falls. It was hot so nice to be in the shade for a while.

We did this part of the trek from Town basin to the Whangarei Falls. Beautiful section of the trail here with a nice tree top walk.

Great to see kauri on the broad walk...wonderful specimens .
..the trek up to the Mackinnon Falls up a 160 steps is a bit of a mission when all you see is a dribble in the summer season..probably best in spring.

Is there public transport from whangarei centre to here. Thank you

No, not that I know of BUT you can walk to this park along a lovely pathway from the town centre. It starts by the Whangarei swimming pool, follows the Hatea river through lovely bush / forest and comes out on Whareora Road where this park is situated. After turning right and crossing the road, you are there! Take a picnic! It's lovely! (You can also continue further along the river and you will end up at the Whangarei Falls - Otuihou in Maori meaning the spot where the tuis - a native bird - hang out). It's a gentle walk along a well maintained path.
