The Whangarei Town Basin is a hub of restaurants and shops looking out over the the marina and is a pleasant location for a cup of coffee and a meal. Before or after your visit you can stroll through the adjacent sculpture park or walk the extremely popular Hatea loop that circles the harbour.

If you are passing through Whangarei this is the best place to find a variety of food, some nice marina views and rather too much tourist junk.

Traveling North from Auckland I stopped at the Basin to break my journey and have a mid morning snack. Parking was free and easy, and you are right next to the basin. There were plenty of boats moored up, many gift shops and cafe's to choose from. Walkways along the side of the basin, children's playground and wheelchair/puhchair friendly

The Whangarei Town Basin was originally where ships would go up to the end of the Harbour and offload their cargoes, turn around and sail away! Now, our lovely Town Basin is a relaxing place to visit, with great cafes and restaurants, shops where you can buy NZ made goods of all types plus go and see the hand blown... More

There are many great eating places, and shops selling quality wares. Specially essential visiting are T he Bach (Northland art and craft items) and Burning Issues (wonderful hand-made glass, and great hand crafted jewellery. Don't miss these if you visit Whangarei!!

Lots of cafes or restaurants to choose from, good playground for the kids to play in & the boardwalk is nice to have a stroll along. The resident glass blower in the art shop is also interesting to watch.

Whilst travelling north we broke our journey up at Whangarei - this included spending some time around the Town Basin (if in doubt - head for the marina). There's a lot of public art displayed on the marina side foot path with some excellent interpretation boards. There's also a good range of cafes / galleries / shops but these do... More

The town basin is developing now to a stage where it really has something to offer everyone, with walking tracks for the fit and not so fit, resturant and bars for those that want to relax, treat for those needing a pick me up and arts and crafts for everyone to appreciate.

We stopped here for lunch. Its a very busy area full of all kinds of clothes and gift shops and restaurants along the Quayside . Well worth a browse. also a museum of clocks( if you have "time!") There is also a huge supermarket across the main road if you need odd things - but take care crossing the road... More

It's well worth coming in off the main road to visit Whangarei's Town Basin. Walking the loop is not only good exercise but you'll encounter all sorts of interesting things along the way. Te Kakano is a highlight for me... so beautiful!!
