Whangarei Quarry Gardens is a subtropical oasis created by volunteers in the remnants of a former quarry in Northland, New Zealand. The Gardens are open to the public and feature subtropical gardens, native forest walks, waterfalls, streams, quarry ruins, tunnels, a scented Camellia collection, a plethora of NZ native and exotic plant species and so much more... The Gardens are a work in progress and have been created through the blood, sweat, tears and laughter of volunteers, supporting companies and other interest groups. Entry is by GOLD-COIN DONATION, with all proceeds used to purchase plants and equipment. Thanks!

A hidden spot, as you would expect in a disused quarry. The gardens were truly lovely to wander round. This should definitely be on your list if visiting Whagarei.

Stopped here to eat our lunch on way through Whangarei. Lovely gardens with easy walking trails. Nice to see what could be an ugly old quarry turned into something picturesque.

This is a treasure, created by dedicated, volunteer visionaries over a comparatively short period of time. It is hard to believe that this was once a functioning quarry, which many of us remember as kids, the action and sound of blasting able to be heard...More

We arrived at 4:00, so had to move around quickly before the gates were locked, however, we were able to see lots of the gardens. It is amazing to think the place was formerly a quarry. It is inspiring what can be done when people...More

Morning tea @ The Quali Cafe in Quarry Gardens and a look around the beautiful gardens is truly a pleasure and a 'not-to-be-missed for the gardener, in this northern city

This is a beautiful garden setting with all sorts of planting and the quarry lake is amazing. Lots of old buildings to wander through and pathways for the kids to explore on. The Cafe is beautiful as well.,

Visiting Whangerei from Australia we visited most tourist sites. The Quarry Gardens are not far out of town and cost is a donation. The camellias and bromilliads were the feature at this time of the year. The lake & stream added interest.

The gardens are open daily, including public holidays from 9am. So yes should be open on Labour Day. There is no set fee but they do ask for a gold coin ($1 or $2) per person. You are of course welcome to give a larger... More
