A popular local beach, alive with surfers, sunbathers, swimmers and walkers-by. The boardwalk extends for miles in each direction, with nicely groomed and well maintained landscape. A nice area to live.

Arriving on Sunday, I took a taxi from the airport to make most of a glorious Sunday Artisan Market. However, for me the highlight was sunning myself in a beach bar with cushioned deckchairs without being charged a penny!

St Kilda is Melbourne's best-known beach. St Kilda Beach is 6 km (4 miles) from the Melbourne CBD, it's an easy trip by tram. The beach is popular with swimmers and sunbathers. Other water sports include windsurfing and jet skis. St Kilda Beach has been made famous by the Esplanade Hotel, said to be Australia's premier live music venue. The carefree ethos of St Kilda Beach has been captured by the well-known Modernist painter Sydney Nolan. The beach is 700 meters (2.300 feet) long. It's a nice walk.

I boarded the free tram one afternoon in October. It was 23c and sunny making an awesome beach day. I walked along the beach watching people fly their giant kites. The golden sand stretched for miles and was still pretty bare. Afterwards, I went for fish & chips and watched the waves roll in.

St Kilda Beach (which can be reached by Tram 16) in Melbourne is a nice place to spend with family and friends. A large green area bordering the beach is a perfect place to spread a picnic lunch or play around. A boardwalk separates the beach from the greens which is a good walking strip. There are a few eating joints which give you a frontside view of the sea as you eat. One of them has an extended area on the beach itself. However the wait time in these places on a public holiday is very long. A walk on the pier is a must to get a panoramic view of the sea.

Nice beach, but not among the greatest things of Melbourne, to my view. Maybe, if you get to see the penguins (which I didn’t), you appreciate it more.

Penguin viewing before sun set on St Kilda Pier. Fishing during the day and come back for the night to feed the chicks. Its free but obey the direction of the volunteers. No flash photos as it affect the birds night vision..

I agree - not too many penguins to see there! We sat for three hours and only saw one swim in and a few chicks in the rocks.
Go to Phillip Island much better!
