This was probably my 4th visit! It's well worth arranging to be there for the free tour but if not, just wander and enjoy. On this visit as I walked up the grand staircase, Chopin was being played on the piano in the front gallery, adding to my enjoyment.

It's always good to hear from repeat visitors - especially that you enjoy your visits. We often have music the Gallery - both organised concerts, but also some impromptu performances from other visitors! More

This gallery has a wide range of work in its collection. It is of particular interest when the Archibald comes to town. A friend and I visited last time and enjoyed our visit. Crows were not a big issue. Just don't be in a rush to do tons of other things. It is worth taking in at ease. You also... More

What a treasure trove right in the heart of Ballarat. We enjoyed a brief 1 hour visit., but wished we had more time. So will be back on future visits.

I saw this amazing staircase from the street and walked in to find that I had walked in to the Art Gallery. The original historic building has been preserved and extended. Over two extensive levels a range of art is displayed ranging from famous early European and Australian works to the modern day. A free tour is conducted most days.... More

This fairly large regional contains an important art from the mid 1800s on including some excellent work from the 1940s on - Heide artists as well as some other prominent Australians. Also has some very good exhibitions - we saw Rennie Ellis - photos documenting counter culture in the 60s, 70s and 80s. Fun show!

We where hoping to see many prints/paintings of the Lindsay family when we visited recently. It was lovely to see the original drawing room of the Lindsay family but the artwork certainly left a lot to be desired.... very disappointing given the prolific works of the family. There wasn't even a book about any of the brothers, or Ruby for... More

Hi Geraldine Sorry that you were disappointed in the range of Lindsay works you saw when you were here - we have a large collection of works by Percy, Lionel, Norman, Daryl and Ruby and there is a changing display of work drawing from that collection in the room dedicated to the family. Over the last few years, the Gallery... More

Recommended by our motel. So glad we delayed our trip so that I could see an amazing collection - streeton, Drysdale, Blackman, Nolan the list goes on. Looked to be a wonderful coffee shop but we hit the road. Do stop to see the best regional gallery in Australia!

I could not believe that so many paintings I had seen in art books are actually here. Many from the Heidelberg School and later, plus many temporary exhibitions are houised here. It really is a large gallery. Today's exhibition were Renee Ellis (1970s photos), the finalists in a photographic prize, and art of the nuclear testing at Maralinga. I could... More

Ballarat Art Gallery has currently an amazing photograph exhibition by Rennie Ellis. The photos of the 70's and 80's are fascinating and bring back so many memories- shouldn't be missed.
