This wine growing region, starting just half an hour out of Launceston is simply gorgeous. From the scenery, to the wines, a micro-brewery, even a gin distillery, not to mention the great places to eat. There is also Honey Tasmania, Seahorse World, Platypus House, plus many other things to do. Worth staying overnight, if you have the time, but a day trip is also terrific.

We drove on the eastern section of the Tamar Valley circuit in the morning and witnessed amazing views of the river, hills and historic towns. Western section on the way home but time was short by then. Plenty of wineries to choose from and the wine and cheese platters were great value. We got as far as Greens Beach which had sensational vistas across the bay and surf beach in the national park. Plan your trip as there is much to see and do and the day flies past....a spectacular drive through beautiful country settings and villages.

Hillwood Jetty Road...Take it to the end and you will come across the Hillwood Coffee Shop. An absolute gem when it comes to wholesome food and coffee. Prices ? Take it from me, you will not beleive the prices...very cheap....but the quality is there also.

The drive through the Tamar Valley is very pleasant. There is plenty to see and there are towns, villages and wineries to explore. You could easily spend a full day exploring the various sights. The people are friendly and it is bustle free. A good way to chill out.

So many fantastic wineries to visit, with Marion's Vineyard sitting at the top of the pile for me. Genuinely one of the most beautiful cellar door locations you will visit, and with a fabulous array of wines.

Moores Hill Estate, Goaty Hill, Holm Oak and Stony Rise should also be on your to-do list. There are so many more, I just need more time!

Beautiful area where we enjoyed spending seven days enjoying some of the delights that the Valley offers. From Low Head to George Town, Windemere, Launceston, Exeter, Beaconsfield and Beauty Head and then a cruise on the Tamar. Lovely scenery, historical sites, attractions and drives; we enjoyed the lot. Great restaurants and cafes. We gave the wineries a miss, too many other attractions.

This is our third visit to the wonderful Tamar Valley. It must be the most ideal place in the world to have a home. We always leave insanely jealous of the residents. Who are by the way friendly, happy and always so helpful. Everwhere there is oicture postcard scenery and wonderfule routes to travel. Accomodation, food and wine are usually exceptional.

Nice for a drive from Launceston for the day. Very quiet with peaceful country side. Good tourist info at Exeter. Not many place open to eat (it was a Monday), nothing at beauty Point. Good if you like wine tasting . We visited Beaconsfield Mine and History Museum - good and also the Platypus House - excellent.

Visited the Launceston/Tamar Valley and north west and north east of Tasmania recently.
Launceston in a smaller city with good eateries and reasonable shopping centre. A must to see is the Cataract Gorge with its chair lift, walking trails and lyre birds near the cafe across the river. Also visit Penny Royal with its rides and activities.
We stayed at Aspect Tamar Valley Resort a Swiss styled resort at Grindlewald north of Launceston which we found as a good base to get around the northern area of Tasmania.
We travelled around the Tamar Valley visiting Exeter, Beaconsfield, Beauty Point where we attended the sea horse and platypus and echidna centres on the west side of the river and Low Head and Georgetown on the east side of the river.
We recommend having a meal at the Riverside Cafe at Beauty Point which has big open windows and views of the river and staff ready to help travellers with history.
We also travelled west to Devonport and Burnie on the sunday with these towns very quaint with most shops closed but still had a good look around.
Also travelled to Scottsdale another quaint historic village to the north east of Launceston. Then headed to Bridestowe Lavender Farm which was very interesting.
All areas we visited were all within one to one and half hours from our base and roads are similar to country travel, there was minimal traffic to contend with. One main highway that travels between major towns to make travelling by car easier.
