Description:

Welcome to Australia’s largest regional museum The Queen Victoria Museum...

Welcome to Australia’s largest regional museum The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery (QVMAG) has enjoyed a long and proud tradition having celebrated its 120th anniversary in 2011. Today it has two key Launceston sites: the 19th century railway workshop at Inveresk which houses the natural science and history collections; and its 1891 Royal Park building on Wellington Street which was officially opened to the public as a dedicated Art Gallery last year. At Inveresk you’ll find our extensive permanent exhibitions Tasmanian onnections, Transforming the Island, hands-on science in the Phenomena Factory, Replay>> Sporting Life in Tasmania and the Heritage Trail. In addition there are a range of special exhibitions and our regular facilities including the Museum Shop, auditorium and café. As if Inveresk is not enough, there is even more at Royal Park. Make sure you visit both sites to really experience all that QVMAG has ‘On show’.

Great museum to learn about the culture and people. The staff was helpful and informative. I was there to trace my families life here during the 1970's

A free entry small museum with science and natural science. Good for young kid to play and walk around. It has a train museum attached to it. If you need time to kill for an hour, it is not a bad place.

There are many things to experience in our QV Museum at Inveresk. The history of many native Tasmanian items, dinosaurs to b viewed, even items with green Go signs to encourage touching and red Stop signs reminding patrons not to touch. Children of all ages will enjoy the day.

An absorbing 1-2hrs of Tassie history in an authentic setting, particularly for train/engineering buffs, well laid out & free entry

Free entry to the museum and small charge for the special events they have running. Very reasonable. Lots of parking (pay per hour) but the car park is a little confusing. Where's the exit!? Friendly helpers at the desk. Visited the dinosaur exhibit, $5 per adult. Short informative exhibit. Visited the planetarium which was about 45 minutes. It was an... More

We went through the Tas Rail Museum & the Blacksmiths shop but we were captivated by the exhibits in the two storey section. From the glow & patina of the leather on the side saddle exhibit to the story of the Tasmanian Tiger Skin rug and the immense research that has been put into the history of the demise of... More

Even as a former resident of Launceston I find I learn something every time we visit this museum. On this occasion it concerned particular Irishmen transported to Tasmania, as well as some facts concerning long forgotten relatives (from a book on sale in the shop).
