We made our way out here to see the monument for the first gold discovery and we're so glad we did! Unfortunately our exploring was a bit short-lived as the recent rains had flooded the crossing, but we found a picturesque picnic and camping spot that's well worth the visit. Took a lot of photos and wished we'd brought our... More

tucked away in the Ophir Gorge is the rocky river with rapids and slow moving deep pools, surrounded by rock faces and littered with old mine shafts. beautiful walks along the river or into the bush where gold mining occurred over 150 years ago. pretty cool cemetery nearby and if its hot, not a bad place for a dip.

old tunnels to and lots of trails to go on. I love Ophir reserve. Get in touch with local wildlife, wander along the river or explore the old goldfields. a touch of history and free to visit. I have camped there many times too.

We loved the reserve as we are keen photographers and artists. The birds and water fowl add additional interest and amusement. It obviously is a great haunt for campers too over Easter as the area has a lot to offer in the way of fishing, walking, swimming and fossicking. This reserve is very pretty. If contemplating a stay, bring your... More

Packed some wood (bought at local service station) and scavenged some kindling in a park in Orange. Lit a fire boiled a billy and cooked damper in a camp oven. Glorious weather encouraged the kids to swim in the waterhole. We were joined by a flock of geese! Lovely drive to and from - water level a bit low in... More

Went for a drive out here with my young son just to have a quick look around as we didn't bring any provisions. It's an interesting drive out of orange to the reserve. Very hilly and a fair amount is unsealed. It's not immediately clear when you enter from Lewis ponds road exactly where you go to get to the... More

Site of the Ophir gold rush. Stemming from Hargraves discovery of gold in the area. Many old workings around to explore. Panning for those so inclined. Enjoy riding out there on the motorbike. Dirt roads though. Great for dual sporters.

It's a long drive on dirt roads to get there and back, but it's worth it. The reserve is an oasis, with picnic facilities and interesting geological features. The nearby village is very historic, going back to the early days of gold mining.

If you have an interest in Australian history this is well worth the visit. If instead you're expecting a theme park then you'll be disappointed, as most of the relics are the physical evidence on the landscape of gold mining in the area. The flushing toilets on site are adequate but not flash, and you should bring your own drinking... More
