History combined with art made this a really interesting place to visit. Three preserved buildings next to each other. A post office , court house and goal. Two are galleries and the post office seemed to be an undecided space when we visited. See a padded cell and containment areas for prisoners. The art was well suited to the spaces and was also worth seeing.

Inspired place to have a small art gallery and there are some thought provoking exhibits and a gift shop. Worth a peep.

Exhibitions change regularly. Open Wednesday to Sunday. Top quality exhibitions by top local national and international artists. Unafraid to be controversial and groundbreaking

I was looking for a unique venue in Newcastle to host my party. The character of The Lock up made for a fabulous summer evening function. The team were so helpful in accosting our requirement as we brought in our own caterers, band and decorators. Our guests were truly ‘wowed’ by the sheer beauty of the venue.

After reading many amazing reviews we couldn't wait to vist the lock up. To our disappointment it is not functioning as a jail tour any more . It was hosting a gallery presentation. The exhibition itself was fantastic and the guide was lovely. But all in all we wanted to learn about the jail. You can still go into the cells but all of the information boards are covered. Maybe if your keen make a phone call prior to the vist. I hope you have better luck than we did.

The Gaol is amazing. Deep history and lovely contemporary Art. Our sons engagement party was held here and I assume it was catered for by an external company. Location is fantastic for this in the courtyard. I missed the padded cell, damn. The Loft staff were polite and very helpful

Always interesting - sometimes confronting but well worth a visit. Set in the old police station atmosphere abounds.

The lock-up is an intriguing contemporary art space in Newcastle. Housed in the old Police Station on Hunter Street this gallery features several unique art spaces in the old cells of the Station. A must for any visitor or Newcastle local this space is free to all and you can spend anywhere from half an hour for a quick appreciation to a few hours if you want to completely immerse yourself in the works.

The artists featured are both local and international and of varying fame from the in-house artists to the recent Newcastle Archibald prizewinner.

If you have some time to spare and want to experience something different, this is the place for you.

We just viewed the Every Breath exhibition which was small but fantastic. This is the old prison so just the building itself is wonderful to explore. The exhibition was set up through the old cells, exercise yard, women's cells. This exhibition was free and the staff were so friendly and helpful.

A truly fascinating part of Newcastle's history, the lock up has a number of immaculately kept former prison rooms. The exhibitions held there are also worth going for alone.
