We visited Hillgrove on our Waterfall Way trip. It is an interesting place and attempts have been made to make it interesting with pictures and information about old buildings that used to be on different sites around the town.

Stopped in on way back from the Wooloombi Falls. Very interesting museum (gold coin donation), stop at the first information sign on the way into the town to pick up a leaflet with the map of the original main street. We also stopped for a...More

The main street takes you to a dead end where the mine workings are. All the way along are plaques marking where once-significant shops, homes and businesses stood in an age long ago (generally mid 1800s or so). It is quite ghostly realising what a...More

Unfortunately the museum was not open and the machinery that is displayed outside is in need of some TLC, but Hillgrove is an historic town and a must see. I loved the signs showing what buildings were originally on site of the current properties.

Called in to visit friends and were interested to see what remains of this previously thriving gold mining town. Not far off the highway and worth a look.

It was on the way back to Armidale after a visit to the Wollomombi Falls. Any trip back in time would be well worth a detour. A pleasant drive from Waterfall Way to Hillgrove. The little township would have been a delight to historians. I...More

Great to walk around and see the history. The museum was wonderful. Looking at the signs of where buildings were made you realise what a wonderful town it must have been

Hillgrove is a scrappy-looking old mining town, nothing more or less. Nearly all the evidence of its colourful history has long gone: the many pubs, shops, churches and miners' cottages. The only buildings of substance that remain are the post and telegraph station and the...More

There was nothing there to see, it's just a very old town with many people still living there.I was disappointed as I was expecting to wander through a ghost town, as the spiel suggested. There was a Museum but we didn't bother with that,so a waste...More
