Lovely entrance to the island from the jetty after leaving the water taxi. Choices of walks - we decided to go left and climbed to the high point with fantastic views. Fantails stalked us a lot of the way and we saw and heard a lot of other bird life. Finally got down to a beach and were warned that there were seals there and to stay well clear of them - they were more interested in sleeping except for a pup that wanted mum to play (he got clipped around the ear a couple of times for disturbing Mum's nap). Back into the bush and wandered around until we got back to the jetty. Everybody we met was keen to chat so the walk took a while. We were far too early for our return trip but our water taxi skipped, Dan, was happy to take us as he wasn't full - and we had a great ride back in choppy seas. All in all a great visit and we'd go again if in the area. Highly recommended

So disappointed. Saw more birds on the mainland than on Ulva Island. Nice bush walk but that’s about it. Felt sorry for the hardcore bird watchers there that had travelled a long way and were left scratching their heads? Won’t recommend.

Would highly recommend going over to Ulva island during a stay in Stewart Island . Does not matter about the weather . Wear walking boots and take a raincoat . Amazing birds , stand and listen and you will hear and see the cutest birds . Very well maintained and looked after by dedicated DOC volunteers. Great paths and beaches . The seals were an added bonus . Lovely experience- thank you .

As a previous review said hardly any birds to be seen. A little disappointed. Think we heard more birdsong in Oban. Also saw a kiwi there.

There are more birdwatchers than birds here. Walker to birdwatcher: "Hi!". Birdwatcher to walker: "Shssh, it's a Grey Warbler!" It is a nice place for a walk, and we did see a big seal on the beach, and some inquisitive wekas. But they do kind of oversell the birdiness of it. There are a few birds, but not the melodic overhead cacophony and visual delights that we had been built up to expect.

So easy to walk around - the tracks are very well maintained. The island has never been milled for timber and has been a nature conservation area since 1899. As a result, the bush is very different from that around Oban. Mature rimu and totara are a feature and the variety of ferns is amazing. Friendly weka and Stewart Island Robins are a delight and, with a bit of patience, we saw parakeets and Saddlebacks. Alas no Kiwi.

As good as we had expected. Lots of birds up close and amazing bush. We even saw a grumpy sea lion on the track and had to give it a wide berth! We walked the whole island in between ferry sailings, but we were rushed for time. Would recommend that you either allow more than 2 hours, or if time limited don’t walk all the way to the far end of the island.

Ulva Island is a pest-free bird sanctuary, and you can see birds that are rarely found elsewhere. I would recommend taking the time to walk slowly and listen for the birds :)

This is a brilliant wildlife paradise and a truly beautiful island. We took a water taxi to the island and spent 5 hours exploring the island. The bush is beautiful and the birdlife some of the best we have experienced anywhere in NZ. The number of Kaka and other native NZ parrots was a special highlight. Well worth the trip.

If you are wondering about how long to visit we did the 900am water taxi over and midday return.
We left jetty and went straight up Flagstaff to view the vista. Then back down into Sydney cove, along beach and back onto track.
Then headed over to Boulder beach. From here the track takes you to Westend beach. Lots of curious Weka birds on this lovely stretch of sand.
Tramp back to the wharf and as we were early another visit up to Flagstaff.
We completed this walk in a steady 2.5 hours with some stops to observe various birds and seals.
The tracks are easy and well maintained and suitable for anyone who can walk.
