Long endlessly beautiful valleys. Farmland and great little places to swim especially at the Greenstone hut... venture down along an old fishing track and theres the most beautiful still pools along the river with naturally formed little seats in the crystal clear water. Huts are super well kept and views 100% NZ. If you can't get onto one of the... More

The Greenstone tracks start from the car park at the end of Greenstone Road, 86 km from Queenstown, via Glenorchy. It's around 4 day round trip, a moderately demanding tramp with some days averaging 6-7 hours of walking. You can find here a really superb diversity of natural features (part of the Te Wāhipounamu-South West New Zealand World Heritage Area).

We freedom hiked The Grand Traverse (a combo of Greenstone and Routeburn) as part of a small group organised by Dunedin Rotary Club. Ages ranged from about 55 to 76. When we met the group we thought they looked quite old but they must’ve thought same about us! Glenorchy pub-cum-backpackers was the pre hike overnight and had a great night... More

Walking the Greenstone usually means a round trip by linking it to the Routeburn or Caples track but a walk up to the Mid valley hut and back is a pleasant overnighter. Lots of side streams to cross. Note to overseas hikers - off the Great walks tracks you are going to wade in water so don't bother taking your... More

We did a multiway walk through this area that has almost no other walkers. It can be linked with other walking tracks to make a longer journey. Highly recommended to make a week walk.

We did this with some friends as part of the "Grand Traverse" including the Routeburn Track. We used Ultimate Hikes as we like a little comfort, it's very pleasant to come in from a hike to a cold beer and dinner cooked and served to you. The views are awesome, the track is quite easy to walk and well maintained,... More

I did the greenstone/caples loop and it was an amazing two day hike. The greenstone side going up to the mckeller saddle was much more steep than the caples side and i was glad that I went up caples than greenstone. amazing views. and you can freedom camp so buying passes isn't necessary for those who like to enjoy the... It was a beautiful tramp but could have been better if we'd gone into it with the proper expectations. First of all, we expected to be finished with the hike within 2 or 3 days. We went around the lake on the first day which set us back about 1.5 days and we felt that we've 'under performed' on the... More

I actually preferred this track to the Routeburn as, while the mountains were not so spectacular, it was much less congested and felt more like being in the wilderness
